I am currently on assignment with a company with operations in many different countries. By doing a reverse Whois lookup I can see they hold hundreds of domains related to their various businesses. About 60% of their domain portfolio is .COM and more than 10% of their domain holdings are CCTLDs which represent brands + the country they operate in. They also hold dozens of new TLDs. I tried checking what they are doing with some of these new TLD registrations. Basically they are merely for brand protection and do not even resolve to the corporate website - even the .careers domain does not resolve to a corporate site. All you get is a landing page for a brand protection page - Safenet.

In the course of my work, I come across many invoices which our division pays as part of its business - some $XXX, many $XXXX and many five-figure invoices as well. I even have some six and seven-figure invoices on my desk. It is normal for companies to spend thousands of dollars on routine and recurring operating expenditures related to travel, IT costs, marketing, professional services, etc. However, it appears all these new TLDs were just brand protection names - not even being used and the only benefactor would be the registries and registrars..

The company has several Youtube channels - some with dozens of videos. Occasionally there will be internal emails about corporate milestones or quarterly results, news, etc. I have never seen any news about buying a domain name or check out our latest website at some keyword.tld page. While they do hold hundreds of domains, they are mere brands and keyword + any TLD is pretty much irrelevant to their business. Perhaps being a B2B company is one explanation for their lack of aftermarket purchases. While companies have the resources to pay up for domain names, after ten years in this industry, I still see little evidence of vigorous aftermarket demand for domain names. Portfolio turn is very low and there is little incentive to invest in domain names because it seems like the odds of success are so low.
