Strange experience FTP & cPanel

I just had a strange experience. I transferred my hosting about 3 months ago, from Reseller to VPS. I used the same domain name as my main host domain on both services. Let's say, example.com

I wanted to add a folder to one of my domains. So I FTP'd into my domain and uploaded the contents of the new folder. Problem was I couldn't access this folder using HTTP. So I complained to my current host. They say they created the folder without any problems. So I use cPanel and see that they have indeed created an empty folder. But where were the files I uploaded?

To cut a long story short. If I FTP into my domain using ftp.xxxxxx.com I go to my old hosting account but when I FTP in using my IP Address I go to my existing hosting account.

The problem is, who is responsible for the FTP still pointing to my old hosting even though I've been using example.com as the hosting account on my new hosting for 3 months already. The nameservers for the domain in question, point to example.com (which is correct). So why am I still being pointed to my old hosting account. And more importantly, how to fix it. This is only happening for FTP. HTTP is working correctly.

what happens if you try to ftp directly to xxxxxx.com

whose nameservers are you using? see if ftp.xxxxxx.com is still mapped to the old IP address

That's the whole point. FTPing to the domain I added a folder to (ftp.xxxxx.com) takes me to my old hosting account. FTPing to my new IP address takes me to my new hosting account.

I see nothing untoward using intodns.com. Is there another tool I should use to check out whether ftp.xxxxx.com is mapped to my old IP address?

Would intodns highlight if you had an A record for ftp which is different to the www A record?

That's the first thing I'd check.

If that's correct, then I'd guess the lookup for ftp.yourdomain.com was cached somewhere... your machine, your router, your isp. But you moved 3 months ago?

Who moved the reseller account over to the VPS? You or them? Also, when they created the folder how did they do it? Did they login with ftp.yourdomain.com, or did they use the cPanel manager, or did they use the IP address?

Have you checked the DNS zone for your domain and made sure that the A record for ftp is pointing to your new IP and not your old IP?
You can check this by logging into WHM, selecting Edit DNS Zone, highlighting your domain and clicking Edit, and then scrolling down to find "ftp"

My new VPS provider moved all my domains. Which is why all the login details were the same as the previous host. I doubt they logged into ftp.mydomain.com because it was going to the wrong hosting provider (well at least for me), where I had already created the folder and uploaded content. So I imagine they used cPanel. *

I just logged into WHM and selected Edit DNS Zone for mydomain.com, everything looks ok. FTP is pointing to my new IP address.

OK. I just tried again to FTP into ftp.mydomain.com, and it went to the correct host this time. I hope it's a permanent fix. I don't know if this was something the host has corrected. I think they would have told me if they had fixed the problem.

* If they couldn't create the folder because it was already created, I think they would have told me. When I FTP'd into ftp.mydomain.com I could see the folder and the files I updated (at the old host). When I FTP'd into my IP address. I saw the empty folder they had created (at the new host). HTTP (which was always correctly working) also confirmed this. Which was I complained about it to my new host originally (not realizing that I'd uploaded my folder and files to my old host).

So anyway. Problem appears to be solved (hopefully). But I think I go and check my Edit DNS Zone for all my domains, just to be on the safe side. I don't expect to find any problems.

I think this must have been a cache problem somewhere, but have never encountered such a problem before. Anyway, hopefully it's over.

OK. I just started checking my other domains Edit DNS Zone. I found some more FTP records pointing to the old IP address. Problem solved. The original transfer was not performed correctly. They also told me they found and corrected the problem for mydomain.com. Which is why it's now working :)
