I saw this on my local news station and thought that this is worth talking to kids about. I've witnessed this in my days in school, at a lower degree than it is happening now.

What is the Choking Game?
The Choking Game achieves a brief high or euphoric state by stopping
the flow of oxygen containing blood to the brain. Sometimes children
choke each other until the person being choked passes out. The pressure
on the arteries is then released and blood flow to the brain resumes
causing a "rush" as consciousness returns. Playing this game in any form
causes the permanent and cumulative death of large numbers of brain
cells. The variation in blood pressure may also cause strokes, seizures,
and retinal damage..

Please spread this to adults you know, and talk about it to kids, and make them realize that this game can cause lifelong damage and even death.

Another good reason for parents to monitor what their children are watching.

Needless scaremongering.

This stuff is really serious. Also, now my girlfriend told me two of her siblings are doing skittleing. This means taking medicines to get high. They have to be shoplifting them because you have to be 18 or older to purchase these. I swear, what are the schools coming to now.

Our society is seriously falling apart! There's too many negative forces affecting our next generation of kids. And, each generation seems to get worse.

Two very on target comments. I can think of a good solution to that, one which is rarely done, because of akwardness:

Maybe they're just trying to win Darwin Awards - but they never will, because there's probably about 5 kids who have ever done it, and a lot of people over-reacting :)

Seriously, did none of you ever do anything remotely dangerous when you were kids?

talk about it to kids

Thank you for this advice, do you have any other potentially dangerous things I could teach them about?

I think you're underestimating the scope of this.. I've personally observed kids attempting this at a teen birthday party, more than "5" there alone..

The goal is to get lightheaded, which in turn, causes a "high"-like effect.

Exactly what I was thinking. As much as it might not seem that big of a deal, it's hurting your body. You also hurt your body when you smoke (cigarettes, marijuana, etc), drink alcohol, etc. Ultimately its your choice, but I'd like to think that any well-minded person could choose the right one. In saying that, kids aren't necessarily "well-minded" simply because they haven't had enough time to evolve to that. They do need the guidance of elders to help them modulate the right decisions.

I heard of cases where kids try to drink correction fluid (white fluid that you use to erase) and apparantly that gives a little kick also. Dangerous at its best.

I do not call it the choking game, Have never even heard of it called that.
Many other names for it, although I will not say them.

I've done it about 15 times, Nothing has ever gone wrong....although the last time I tried it was about 5 years ago

Certainly don't reccomend it but kids don't know any better

involved counting to 10...leaning back etc...won't say it all (sometimes can be done by self)

Total Time Elapsed: 30 seconds

that's pretty disturbing...parents need to talk to these kids and take them seriously. I've just read an article about a kid who hanged himself just to choke himself but never came through the ropes, i think, so he died (oh so that's the choking game) .Kids these days are becoming more advanced trying out a lot of diffrent things, having their way...its sad to think that most cases were just to attract attention to their parents. :(
