Status: Redemption Period ?

Can anyone explain this to me ? the domainexpired back on December 4, 2004, and status says redemption period.

The redemption period is a Domain Registry period of up to 30 days that occurs when a domain name is deleted after having expired unrenewed. Instead of just getting deleted and returning to the pool of domain names available for registration, the existing registry keeps a hold on the domain name in a what is technically called as REDEMPTION PERIOD. During this 30-day redemption period, the original domain registrant (owner of the domain) is allowed to retrieve the domain name from deletion by contacting their Registrar.

It has been well past 30 days ... it expired December 5, 2004 ... its been 50 days ?

I have read it can actually be up to 180 depending on the registrar.

Chad, let this breakdown help you:

1. The registrar will hold onto the expired domain name from 1-45 calendar
days. If not renewed by then, they'll delete it from their own records.

2. Once deleted by the registrar, the Registry will put it in Redemption Period
(.com and .net) or Pending Delete/Restorable (.org, .info, and .biz) for 30
calendar days in their database. The last registered owner has one very last
chance of getting it back before it reaches the point of no return.

3. If not "redeemed" by the domain's last registrar by then, the Registry will
put the name on "Pending Delete" for 5 calendar days before releasing it on
the 6th, ideally, at around 1-2PM EST.

4. Check the last updated date from the Registry, then add 36 days from it.
It'll tell you when the name will, ideally, be available.

On the other hand, if the name in question is a rather common or very highly
desired name, you might have to "fight" for it using the "backorder" services
like SnapNames, Pool, etc. That is, if you really want that name and you have
the money to burn.

30 days is the minimum. There's no guidelines for the maximum, so it's up to the registrar. 2-3 month of redemption period is nothing unusual.

On the other hand, if the name in question is a rather common or very highly
desired name, you might have to "fight" for it using the "backorder" services
like SnapNames, Pool, etc. That is, if you really want that name and you have
the money to burn.

Is the name that important?

:bingo: - I think you hit the Nail on the Head - If there's any chance at all that someone else is interested ..... Be Prepared to Fight in the trenches and Dish Out 60-100 $ at LEAST ~
