According to the article, Zuykov said:

For his part, Zuykov insists he isn't trying to capitalize on Starbucks' success. "We just like the name," he said.

But the article quoted him first saying:

"If no one before me imagined to do this, if I am the first, then I get the prize," he said.

Hmmmmm......

Hmmm can you say thief. He is lieing through his teeth. He knew what he was doing and he liked the name allright. He hopes Starbucks will pay him big for it. Just sad.

The interesting part is it cost him only $20 to register the TM on the name. i guess it's so cheap caseu the government over there doesn't do anything but give him a piece of paper. At least in the US, they do research to make sure you have a right to the TM.

Have in mind that the legal rights of US companies in Russia can not be more than the legal rights of Russian companies in US.

Certainly, there is nothing sad here. Congrats Mr Zuykov. Well-done!

This is an ethical and moral issue. The rights of any company can and should be protected no matter where they are from. The character of any person is determined by how they deal with any given situation or how they deal with others in business and personal life. We protect the rights of the Russian companies doing business in the world as well as our own. For example take a look at LukeOil on the East coast. This is a purely Russian company doing business on U.S. soil and should be protected even if not on U.S. soil. The rights of all people need to and should be protected including the rights of a business entity. By siding with such an obvious attempt to cash in on someone elses hard work this only shows us the type of person that you are.

It is not congrats to Mr. Zuykov it should be him doing the right thing and giving the domain up to the company that has a registered trademark.

Where do they have a registered trademark?

Yes the trademark is in the U.S., but you are telling me that you would do this regardless of their business. Very unethical is what it is. Obviously fair business tactics are not an issue with this.

something i cannot understand. starbucks already several years has caffees in Moscow. How could they not take care of those simple things?

Of course, it is in US! Obviously, it was not trademarked in Russia and they have to pay now some extra money. Why do you think that having a trademark registered in US is equal to have a trademark registered in any other country in the world? You guys make me smile. Why do you think US=Russia or US=World? :hehe:

Lukoil are doing business in US because they did take care to protect and cleared their trademark in US. They have paid for it.

As per the "moral issues"... you make me smile again!
The Russian guy is willing to sell the rights for $600K. Well, if Starbucks intend to have a real legal battle, by all means, it will cost them more... The name of the game right now is "Publicity" and some well known pr tricks are applied when a company launches a business in a foreign country. So, take it easy and relax...

Just another issue ICANN should be clamping down on..Now if ICANN was a trully international body, perhaps international issues like this would be less likely to crop up.

I've heard about it a while ago, they offered the TM for $xx,xxx but Starbucks said no cuz of their morals or something like that, I know that $50k is nothing for someone like SB, but still :/

Not saying they are, but the issue is whether it is right. No it is not. You are right though on one thing. They will have to pay through the teeth to obtain the domain name. And they should have taken care of shoring up their domains. Also if they are doing business in Russia then they may or may not have a case there. The issue is just about being right or wrong and it is wrong for someone to take advantage of this. No matter their country.

I dont like squtting in any way. But it shows that TMs should register their names in important country. Russia is of that kind, imo.

I think this discussion went off track here. This is not about a domain issue, it is the actual registered mark of the Starbucks name. ICANN doesn't handle this. Also, Startbucks DOES do business in Russia, so they do have TM rights is Russia. This guy registered the name only, that is loose government.
