Sql Server with Joomla?

This might sound weird but let me try to explain. I develop websites with Joomla, but I'm not a computer programmer. One of my prospects wants documents from his SQL server to appear on the backend of a Joomla installation.

Can this work? He will host everything from his servers. I'll be using Joomla with MySQL and somehow I need to pull in content from the SQL server so that the registered members can view these documents.

Will I require iframes? Are there any resources online that will allow me to read more about this?

This is way out of your field, too much info to explain for free.

Summary: You'd simply code an admin panel that makes SQL queries on the fly, outputting data where is needs to be displayed and updating / deleting / inserting fields when needed.
