I am working on a hobbyist site on football (soccer) aiming at an international public. The site will be purely a hobby and information resource, no online salespoint for football merchandise.

The name I had in mind is available in many extentions, as .co.uk is cheap and easy to get here (I live in Northern ireland) I first considered this.

However, for an international sports website, would it be better to use a more generic extention?
Or should I go for something exotic like .SC (as in Soccer, although it sounds a bit bizarre to me)?

I believe there was once the idea to create a .FT extention where .FT could be seen as abbreviation for Foot or Football. Never truely happened as far as I know, even though I've seen football sites where links to 'zidane.ft' were posted for the so-called official website of Zinedine Zidane.

A co.uk won't be a good choice for an international football site and a .sc would certainly sound bizzare. Since your site will be purely a hobby and information resource, I think a .info domain would be a good option.

Use either a .co.uk or .com.

Zidane's official site is :: www.zidane.fr

There's nothing the matter with .co.uk, although it's not straight forward if you ever come to sell it and you have to reg for a minimum of two years. As stated above though, .co.uk might not be the best choice for an international site.

Depending on the content of your site you could consider .TV (I hold a couple of soccer/football domains that get traffic from all over), otherwise .com. The .net is also a viable choice but you will have to accept that if your site becomes successful you will lose traffic to the .com.

Best of luck!

EDIT: Meant to add also, I wouldn't go for .sc (unless I had big bucks to promote, but then I would probably look at putting the money into a better extension) - IMO

.com is definitely the best choice to go for.
Why not go for both .com and .co.uk and have the .co.uk forwarding to the .com site.
