Handcuffs designed for elderly
Rob Shaw, CanWest News Service
Published: Monday, June 11, 2007

VICTORIA -- Senior-citizen handcuffs? Only in Victoria, you might say -- and you'd be right. The Victoria Police Department has developed a prototype handcuff for the elderly, designed to protect their fragile skin in cases where they have to be restrained.

The invention is among the first of its kind, the department says. Instead of using unforgiving metal cuffs, police have designed padded nylon straps, said Const. Mike Massine, the department's use-of-force expert. Field tests start next month.

Well, to me in a way it's good that they get handcuffs like this so that they're wrists don't get all cut up, but on the other hand, why should they get special treatment? If they break the law, don't they deserve the same as everyone else?

It's a good invention in a sense so the elderly will not be hurt when using standard handcuffs.

being under arrest doesn't mean they're guilty. if standard handcuffs don't hurt the youth, but hurt the elderly, then haven't the youth been getting the special treatment all along?

my question is, how would the police know when to use the elderly handcuffs and when to use the regular ones? i've seen some pretty strong guys in their 50s and 60s.

I think it would be up to the one being arrested to request those handcuffs or not.

The elderly can be just as dangerous as some younger individuals so no they shouldn't get special treatment.

Why does a 60 yr. old need 5-6 bodyguards?

Lol they must get to an age when they get to the robbery site and forget why they are there ... or if they do manage to remember the aches and pains stop them from running away....

:)

Serious though, They should have learnt by then that crime does not pay :td:

Isnt the whole point of life.. learning

I take care of my elderly father - and his skin peels off if he barely scrapes against something - - it's nearly impossible for him to wear a watch anymore.
I think that's probably what they were talking about - old people's skin gets really really thing - they bruise and get cuts easily.
