Hi fellow NPers,

With all of the recent news about projects in Dubai, I decided to go ahead and register a domain. The name was www.songs.ae. Take a look and tell me what you think.

I decided to register it after discovering that the search term "songs" was more popular in the Middle East than the word "music". If you check the Alexa ranking for songs.com you'll see that almost 30% of its traffic is derived from the Middle East Region. If you visit songs.pk you'll also see that it is a very popular site for that region.

So, what do you think? Was it a good one to register or did I make a big mistake. Would like to hear your thoughts.

These are much stronger domains because they are generic key industry domains.

Songs.ae would probably worth $50.

Very interesting. I have forgotten that most of these foreign domains are expensive to register. Then my estimate is the reg fee. Try to put it on the Make Offer forum and start the price with $60 to see if anyone is willing to get it with reg fee + $10. Please keep us posted if you do.

The .ae ccTLD is crap. For the Middle East, .net is REALLY good/acceptable. I was just there a couple weeks ago domain hunting (yes, seriously). .com/.net are the only best bets. SOME people use ccTLDs, but after checking out what's going on, .net is great, .com is also great (I value them on the same level for Middle Eastern targeted domains) and ccTLDs are just being screwed around with so much they are not even worth the hassle.

If you're looking to get domains targeted for the Middle East stick to Arabic IDNs. Good terms for "songs" in Arabic would either be أغاني or موسيقى, but the IDNs are already taken and worth a bundle.

There hasn't been many sales in the .ae extention, I would say aroun Mid to High $xx

I've read the above post and understand that many ccTlds are not worth their registration fee, but don't the following facts increase its vale:

1) "songs" is a keyword that describes an entire industry

2) "songs" is a more popular search term than "music" in that region of the world

3) almost 30% of the traffic that its .com counterpart receives is derived from that part of the world, making the .ae extension highly relevant when combined with the keyword "songs"

I am trying to use Alexa as a tool that will allow me gain insight into what keywords to register in their respective ccTlds. If you check the Alexa Traffic Ranking of www.songs.com at the following link and scroll down to the breakdown of the countries(regions) that are visiting their site, it seems to make sense that "songs" combined with a Middle Eastern ccTld could capture some of the traffic that the .com version is getting.

That is why I registered www.songs.ae. To register a good keyword in a ccTld is fine, but to be able to point to a possible source of traffic should add value to the domain.

Does my rationale make sense? Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Hi Antonio,

Songs.ae will be good if you develop a site for it. Most of our appraisals are for the resell value (for investment purpose). Although song and music is a big industry, the domain does not have a popular TLD. You may be able to sell the domains to people at UAE and get a lot of money for it. Currently, from our observation, there are not a big market in the .ae domains. May be that will change in 10 years.

With this domain name, if you develope it good, it can turn to a multiple millions dollars website.

Just want to add this:

If you park this domain somewhere and let people make offer on it, in a year, you may get a better offer from low to high $xxx given that auto.ae, shops.ae and estates.ae were sold for low $xxx to low $x,xxx.

If you auction it, because of the short duration on the exposure, you may get the reg fee or reg fee + 10 to 20%.

Anyway, to be fair, I should say Low $xxx instread of $50.
