.mobi Some dot Mobi questions...

Hi folks. I'm developing an interest in dot mobi names and had a couple questions. I've been reading up on sales and it seems that most that sell for more than scratch right now are single word generics. Is that about right? Is anyone having any luck hand regging these are has the well gone dry?

Also, I get the impression that people on this board see mobi as having great potential down the road (2 -10 years?) for good social networking names. Is this true? What about blogging sites?

And finally, it seems that mobi names need to be short. My sense is about 10 letters or less unless it's a really good generic. Does word count (2 no more than 3 really short words) matter as long as it stays short?

Thanks!

Greetings KRX!

I'll try a quick answer to the first question only - since the third one requires a much longer discussion, and I have no insight at all on the second one.

There are two-word terms that have sold for decent amounts; I think VegetarianCooking.mobi sold for mid-$XXX earlier this year for example.

If you're just starting out though - and assuming you are looking for resale profits rather than developing a branded site - it's probably best to stick to single-word generic terms that you can see yourself or your friends searching for on a mobile device when out and about.

There are many exceptions and additions to this simplistic rule of thumb that I'm proposing off the cuff here, but it's probably good enough to get a discussion going.

See you around!

Regarding number of words in a name...look at the .com story. First one word names are registered, then two words, etc. It doesn't mean it is the most logical way, it is what domainers tend to do (and to buy from each other)

Now is a buyers market. There have been several premium auctions in the past 60 days with many more to follow. It's been said by many and echoed more than once, better to have a few quality names (with a few renewals) than hundreds of mediocre names (and hundreds of renewals). But it all comes down to your budget and what you can afford at any given time. The aftermarket is really a great place to pick up some real decent names for little more than reg fee. Sure, you might find a somewhat decent fresh reg out there, but at this stage, they're pretty dried up.

When you find the working crystal ball, let us all know...As of now, we're all speculating on which category might make it big on the mobile web. Some think the mobile web will someday be just as diverse as todays PC based web. As for premiums on social networking or blog sites? Who knows? There are many very popular "mobile categories" that have tremendous potential as well. It's up to you to use your common sense and or "gut feeling".

The way I see it (and from viewing those of you who have unreal text messaging speed..which seem to be the majority of todays youth), I don't see a big premium over short words. Unless they're relevant to the mobile environment. Cabs.mobi? Great! Push.mobi? I don't know? I know everyone doesn't agree. Most had nothing good to say when I regged holidayscreensavers or freecrosswordpuzzles. But the fact is, these 2 are not only my longest, but my most profitable parked mobi's to date. They both have great CTR's. Remember that all mobile browsers have a favorite feature. If they like what they see, chances are they'll only be inputting it in once.

There are no easy answers to your questions. Only years will determine who is right and who is wrong.

Best of luck!

I am mostly focusing on resale at the moment. So generic means a nonTMd word or phrase that people already use a lot? And a brandable is a name that requires development to become well utilized... Have I got that?

What would you call Flirtation.mobi? (just picked it up).

I'd like to get involved in the aftermarket. What's the best way? Where are the good auctions?

Thanks again for all the input. This forum is really fantastic!

Really impressive start, IMHO!

Some people may say flirtation.mobi is borderline, but if you treat is as brandable by your definition you won't go too far wrong.

Aftermarket-wise, normally I would say it depends on your budget.

This month only though, it depends on your borrowing capacity:

http://www.namepros.com/dot-mobi/393711-sedo-3-100-more-mtld-premiums.html#post2320923

Just kidding about borrowing BTW, it's way too early for that if you've just started.

The link above is mainly to give you an idea of what phenomenal keywords you would be competing against if you buy something else.

Otherwise finding great deals would not be hard at all right now (mainly due to the unprecedented amount of premium auctions as illustrated in the link above) if you post in and/or read the ".mobi marketplace" sub-sub-forum here.

I just hope you never forget to keep asking questions.

And you would do well to heed Tophatter's warning above.

WOW! What great names! Are sales reports available on the first two rounds? Also, where will the third auction be held?

Now I'm gonna go poke around on the mobi marketplace sub-forum!

I like flirtation.mobi as a hand reg - social networking with an edge. Surprised it was available, people have combed through lists of one word names very thoroughly.

The auction is at SEDO.com you can find more details there, not sure when it starts or finishes. Page back a little ways in this forum or use the search box on the top of the page for detailed reports of the SEDO auctions and also the more expensive TRAFFIC auctions. There are development requirements for the SEDO/TRAFFIC names.

And spend your money slowly. Learn so you don't burn.

Thanks! I was quite happy to find it. Social networking with an edge is just what I had in mind!

I'll do a search and see what I can find.

Good advice. Could have used it 2 weeks ago! :( Made a few bad regs on the "if it sounds good, buy it" principal. No more of that!
