So here's one that hasn't asked before... .ca vs. .ru (Canada v. Russia)

Spaceship Spaceship

Which has more potential as an extension for a name able to be resold?

  • This poll is still running and the standings may change.
  • .RU

    12.8%
  • .CA

    87.2%
  • This poll is still running and the standings may change.

Basically, I've noticed we have a lot of .ca fans milling about, but haven't met any sold-out .ru fans yet...
My take is that Canada has a higher earnings per capita and a more "developed" country, but it's hard to compete with Russia's raw purchasing power and the overwhelming number of the rising generation that eats/lives/sleeps/drinks computers.

So, straightforward question:
Which extension do you view as having the most potential as a resellable name and why?

certainly .ca
there aren't very many russians and they are poor. You will get a lot more hackers and totally useless traffic with .ru

Not very many Russians?
They have the 8th largest population in the world (Canada is #35, behind Poland, Tanzania, etc.)...

However, Canada's per capita is right at $29K, while Russia's is about 1/3 of that.

But, Russia's GDP is almost 50% greater than Canada's

There exists plenty of Capital in Russia.

Just my take on the numbers, of course.

Easy: .CA

I have nothing against Russians, but it is my opinion that hackers, scammers and spammers have ruined the .RU TLD. About 2 years ago I started noticing a trend in spam and scam emails and websites: a .RU extension. And I am certain that I'm not the only one.

I think it will take a long time for .RU to get 100% legit again, if ever.

As always, IMO.

Population: 143,420,309 (wow! that is only 0.11 per sq km)
I wouldn't say taht it is a lot. their population is decreasing very fast and most of them do not have computers.

I think that .ca is better. They seem to have more resell value (although both doesn't have much)

Sorry, me Russian friend’s but .ca domains is more popular :)

.ca is potentially on a similar level as .de re value. .ru is unfortunately at junk south-seas ccTLD

Even though I'm native Russian, I'd have to go with .CA, because .RU confuses many people, and is really frustrating to operate in a russian control panel. No problems for me, since I know the language B-) but it'll be hard for a non-russian buyer. On the other hand, you have to live in Canada to legaly own .CA domains.

.ru is where people go to look for mp3 downloads, warez, virii, hacking, phreaking, cracking, etc. Its like the TLD equivalent of IRC and newsgroups all in one.

I went with .ca. The reason I did this was not because of the "bad reputation" that .ru has, as everyone mentioned before, but rather because IMO the domain market is mainly based out of North America. Don't get me wrong, I know domains are huge in other countires, like the UK, Austrailia, etc, but generally speaking, I would say domains are based out of North America. Since Canada is in North America, I think it is a better extension than .ru.

I would say that .de has a much much stronger market than .ca.

Anyway, I'm not sure how strong the market for .ru is in Russia, so Im not really sure. You can't really compare them, unless you know each country quite well.

use .ca

I think .ca is a better one.

Well I don't want to be an apologist for the .ru , but I would vote for it over .ca .
I don't buy the argument that .ru is for hackers/porn, because most spam/porn/hacker stuff I get in email is .com namespace...

BUT,

I am a slave to public opinion on here I s'pose.
I'm sticking by my .ru guns, I love the names and think that the market there is growing faster than almost any other ccTLD from my observation.

HOWEVER,
I will throw ya'll .ca folk a bone ;)
Attached is a list of the 4,000 .ca 3 letter combos that are still available as of this posting. (Out of 17,000). Some good ones available, so you Canadians need to grab those bad boys if you like your extension so much ;) ;) ;)

The header sounds like a icehockey final.

I´ve voted for .ru because I have never been on an important .ca site and I don´t know any.

I like the Canadian Moose but not their extension. ;)

quote of the week right there

anyways, i like the fact that canada has a population of english speakers, which makes business easier, but do see the ru market as good.

.ca

I thought I would dredge this back up because I have decided to invest in a few 3 letter .ca's. (I was actually looking for IAmAllanShore's list ;))

The reasoning is that I am hoping on some resale value down the road. I am a Canadian citizen so I can reg them, and, obviously, I may know a bit more about business in Canada than someone who is from another country...

So I am going to speculate on a few of these, after all, that is what the game is all about, right?

And, in response to:
I´ve voted for .ru because I have never been on an important .ca site and I don´t know any.
If you were Canadian you would obviously know a lot of important .ca sites, I guess the same can be said for any country...

So here are a few of my favourites B-)

http://www.tsn.ca <-- PR 7
http://www.canoe.ca <-- PR 7
http://www.canada.ca (actually http://canada.gc.ca/) <-- PR 9
http://www.cbc.ca <-- PR 8
http://www.ctv.ca <-- PR 8

Not to mention all the big names with their .ca equivalents (Google, Yahoo, Dell, etc...)

We Canadians are always defending ourselves

But we are a wealthy country, and even local businesses have money, so those looking to improve their international business may see investing in a nice, short domain name a good idea... Now I just have to figure out which the the short ones that are left are actually "nice" :|
