OK so I've been in the hosting industry a very long time now and I have noticed that overselling has got more and more crazy over time.

  • 7 years ago, 2GB of disk and 10GB bandwidth was considered overselling.
  • Today, its common to see offers at 1000GB/1000TB.

So my question, to all you looking for web hosting, do you really think you will need all that space and bandwidth?

I'm going to let you in on a little secret. (Some might hate me for this!) Out of all my customers, 99% use less than 1GB disk and 5GB transfer.

Every hosting provider out there knows this, and will tack on a bunch of 0s to their offer to make it look more enticing . The thing is, if you aren't using the space, you aren't getting any extra value. If you come even close to the amount they offer, I am willing to bet you will be suspended faster than you can blink. This advertising tactic is very misleading and a lot of newcomers base their decision off the meaningless numbers they see. Here is an article that covers web host overselling a little more.

Bloggers - Think again if you believe you need anything more than 1GB of space. You could type blog posts until you are blue in the face before you come close to using 1GB(unless you incorporate a lot of videos and images)

Forum owners - Considering most forums are text based, forums use hardly any bandwidth. If you run a highly active forum, eventually you will start consuming decent amounts of disk space. However, there is no way that a shared host would allow such a forum to exist on the servers. You will be shut down before you use even a fraction of that 100gb/1000tb.

What should you consider than? If you see a host offering such impossible amounts of resources for an even more impossible price, look elsewhere. If you want a decent service, look to spend $5-10/m for a reasonable amount of disk space and bandwidth.

I don't mind if a host oversell if they are providing a reliable and quality service. There are many that do oversell but are still providing a very reliable service.

saw the same post over at WTF.

I think technology is driving this a bit ...

also some hosting companies allow multiple domains on 1 account. :)

Most clients will never need so many resources (it is the reason why is overselling possible). On the other hand most webmasters require web hosting plans offering more resources they will ever need.

I created a thread on another forum asking "How looks ideal web hosting plan for you?" a few days ago. Most answers was like unlimited web space or xxx,xxx GB and the same requirements for the data transfer allowance.

So clients don't like limits and we should be able to offer them what they are asking for.

This happened to me a few years ago. I signed-up for an account that offered unlimited bandwidth & unlimited cPanel accounts. Somewhere around account 100, I was shut down. They still advertise today unlimited bandwidth & unlimited cPanel accounts. I bet nobody gets to use either. I sure didn't.

Its like everything with the technology.

Why do many people always wants computers with a lot of RAM, HD and CPU, the best graphiccard and so on, when they only wants to use the computer to surf on the net, email and occasionaly write a letter. :)

People just want the best, the biggest.

Marketing

Its all marketing because the users that find these great offers so attractive don't realize that they would never use that much disk/bandwidth.

exactly. in the end they end up paying more than they need to. a few dollars might not seem like a big difference each month, but x12 that's a few renewal fees each year.

Really agree. But there are decent oversellers in the field who manages their marketing plan well and they have a decent reputation also.

I would have to agree. I myself running Accurate Hub Networks learnt from the past when I used to host my sites with other host providers (went through 5 in 1 month) I hardly never stayed with a single provider because simply they oversold meaning EXTREMELY SLOW servers!

Thats why I decided to start my own hosting company :)

Well enough about me, I do believe oversold is a marketing scam. Use too much and your kicked away. Read their TOS/AUP what do they allow/dis-allow. Thats one small way how you can tell the difference between a good provider and bad :)
