Countries with small populations have a higher number of .eu domain name registrations, reports market research firm IPwalk.

.Eu domain registrations are disproportionately high in small countries like Malta, Luxembourg, Cyprus and the Netherlands as compared to more heavily populated countries such as Germany and the United Kingdom.

Ipwalk's report comes after EURid, the registry managing .eu domains, suspended 74,000 .eu domain names and sued 400 registrars for breach of contract citing registration abuse using fronts, which were located in Cyprus.

EURid's investigation brought to light a number of anomalies in the .eu system, and Ipwalk decided to examine the number of .eu domain names per country per relative to its population size to find other possible anomalies. An unusually large number of .eu domain names per citizen could indicate that other fronts for registration abuse.

Coming from the Netherlands myself I can say that this is not just due to cybersquatting. By itself there are a lot of domains registered by dutch civillians, .nl domains there is over 1 domain for each 10 residents alone already. But asides from that other domains are a lot more popular since they are much more saying.

If you compare the .nl domain with domains like .de, .co.uk or .fr in example not many will know that .nl is the dutch domain, or even that it is located within europe. So if you are focussing on an international market a .eu domain is very interesting, and with the coming of the .eu domains this has also been a reason for a lot of companies and even users to register themselves a .eu domain.

Well at least they're doing something about it. Now if only someone would take a hard look at the .US domain space...

This is why ICAAN is and always should be under US control. The EU messup and corruption scandal is akin to the United Nations scandals. It's another example of how EU is so full of corruption that giving them a chance to free-market domains is going to be a farce. ICAAN has it's problems I will say though.

While the launch of .eu was utterly incompetent and the advisors of the EU and the EC who gave bad advice deserve to never work in the industry again, at least 90% of the corruption came from US and Canadian cyberwarehousers who gamed the simpleton rules that were in place with phantom EU companies and bogus registrars. EURid management cretinously ignored warnings about the rules being gamed. For that the management of EURid should be terminated and the contract to run .eu should be put out for tender again - this time with proper oversight and competent advisors.

While the European Commission must accept part of the blame, the cyberwarehousers are just as guilty. It is not simply a EU problem.

This might seem like a bit of a rant but it is really directed at the incompetence of EC and EURid. The domain business needs domainers to keep it alive but parasites like Ovidio and the other cyberwarehousers can kill an extension. From what I've seen, the .eu gTLD has been strangled at birth by these warehousers.

As for the US keeping control over the Root Zone - I am in favour of that. Most other European sysadmins are as well because the worst thing in the world would be letting the morons in the UN destroy the net.
