slade.com and other premium domains

Hi,

I have "dabbled" in domain buying and selling over the past few years and am glad to see there are forums like this as I would very much like to improve my knowledge of the domain catching process but also get to know how much domains are worth and can be sold for in general.

I am currently in an auction for slade.com, the highest bid is 3,000 USD and theres an hour to go on the auction.

My question is:

1) What would you appraise this domain at, it is really worth 3000 USD?

2) I thought I had been rather sneaky and found myself a very good domain (slade.com) that has expired, but was dissapointed to find through snapnames that a lot of people had bid on the domain. These days, where people have whole business from selling domains, is it actually possible to "catch" a great domain like this on the cheap, or will they always go to auction?

3) Does anyone have any GOOD reccomendations for domain "spotting" websites that list expired domains, I dont mind signing up for these but how good are these sites?

4) I recently got planetsailing.com due to the fact I did a whois on this and found it was in redemption period. The domain hadnt actually been deleted yet, so I put a backorder in on snapnames and won. Is it possible to find lists of these domais (eg ones that havnt actually gone into the delete stage)? Correct me if i'm wrong but it seems like any domain thats already gone into delete (and not available for backorder) seems to be a no-go area as they are then open to go into auction and your then up against other bidders..... is this correct?

You cannot ask for an appraisal if you do not own the domain

If it's as good as you think it will almost always go to auction

You can talk about value of a dropping domain here. You can't ask in appraisals for an appraisal if you do not own it.

ANyways I was in on the auction more for curiosity then anything. Will be interesting to see the final price.

18 min left, still at 3K but this is the time when the price really moves (in the last 15 min).

Its pretty near impossible to (legally) monetize so that would say (to me) its only any good as a brandable domain for resale, there are also a few current TradeMarks on the name to consider.

It'll probably go for 6k or so ?? - I'd save my money and buy something more usable

Thanks for answers on this, firstly apologies I wasnt up to scratch on the rules with appraisal... I wasnt really after an appraisal to be honest (I dont own that domain nor wanted to pay 6k for it!) I was just curious to see people opinions on whether you thought it was worth that much, and whether you think it would make a profit at that much money?

Yeah Slade are a few famous rock band here and released a big xmas hit (one wit wonder), a google search on "slade" gets 6 mill odd results so its probabl a factor why its worth so much (I guess slade.com as an amazone affiliate site selling CDs on affiliated links would be quite easy to make some cash on.. but then maybe not, i've never tried it myself).

does anyone have any feedback on my questions above 3) and 4)? Keen to hear thoughts on this?
