Im building a tutorial style website for new computer users. I would like to include new articles in my site. Just wondering is it legal to take articles from other sites ( cnn, slashdot, etc.) and use them on my site as long as I give credit to the source??

I think so, as long as you give credit, and dont change anything!

I know slashdot is fine, they provide information on their site on just how to do it. Some sites are different. Most big news sites allow it as long as credit and a link back are given and nothing is modified. Some smaller sites that also provide tutorials do not allow it because they don't want to lose visitors to others sites. Email the owner if its a smaller site and ask permission first.

It's illegal without consent from the owner of the copyright of the content you want to copy. For every source you want to copy content from it is your responsibility to make sure that they allow you to do so.
