I'd have to go with singular.

Singular for sure.
Unless it's something like "shoes" or "boots", etc...

Actually, I think Cars is better than Car. Kind of like, Toys is better than Toy or Jobs is better than Job, Houses better than house, homes better than home, etc.

Sometimes, singular is better though. Just depends on the name.

I really don't have a solid strategy on singulars or plurals as of yet but I do agree with Jim, whereas I think of plurals in a LOT of cases as better.

Here's a quick thought. If I am looking to purchase something online, I think I always type in the plural of that name because I want many choices rather than typing in the singular and most likely getting one choice. It is probably not true since I am sure there a lot of Companies that have the Generic singular name, and do have multiple choices, but I just believe I am getting more options by searching that generic by adding an "s". IMO.

So, in your above example, I would definitely choose "cars".

For some reason, I am thinking about this question a lot. After I responded and jumped out of the thread I was thinking of what few product domains i own, and I have to say I really do like the singular in other cases more than the plural. I have weightbench. Now that in the singular sounds a helluva lot better than the plural would sound.

I wish I could figure out why some generics sound better in plural, while other sound better in singular but I can't. I guess if you are asking this question because you have the option of buying both, then buy them both, and then throw them both in an appraisal thread asking which sounds better. But if it were the case that both WERE available, then you had better buy them both...for traffic, and for a defensive reg so you would eliminate a potential competitor.

Hope that helps a little, lol

Vito.

It's easy two parter.

It depends on whether the VARIETY of MODELS matters.

i.e.
Cars vs Car. You're talking about multiple manufacturers, multiple parts. You don't want the site to limit to one.

The second part is brand.

You generally brand on a specific thing. You brand on a Pumpkin because you are singular not Pumpkins because you aren't many. You're conveying you are the single branded entity.

It does get hazy with WeightBench.

I still prefer weightbenches.com if you are trying to sell/compare and the singular if you want to be "Weightbench" the company. Weightbench/es.TV - it depends on what you want to do with it.

This isn't complete by any means.

Singular usually eg BIKINI.TV or BIKINIS.TV :imho:

For selling bikinis? Bikinis.TV
For selling myself as a brand, Bikini.TV

For a $1000/year premium and 15K up front cost difference... that's another matter and depends on my budget.

I'd prefer hotels.tv compared to hotel.tv.

Exactly, I 100% agree with the above. Cars, Toys, Jobs are better as a plural.

I agree with this statement as well. The extension itself has little to no effect on whether plural or singular is dominant. It depends entirely on the keyword to the left of the dot. Both plural and singular are always valuable given the right keyword.

Certain words function as both singular and plural like "knowledge" or "money" (monies notwithstanding) or "fish", and of course destinations are by nature singular. There's only one Miami, Florida.
