ICANN Establishes Forum on Allocation Methods for Single-Letter and Single-digit Domain Names

MARINA DEL REY, CA - As recommended by the GNSO Council, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) is commencing a forum on potential allocation methods for single-letter and single-digit domain names at the second level in gTLD registries.

According to a press release by ICANN, examples include a.com, i.info, 4.mobi, 8.org. Since revenue will result from this allocation, comments regarding the potential uses for this revenue are also requested..........

I think you've got a point here. I think most of the names would go at 100,00k USD.

guess so. but they are committed to reinvesting, like they have done with auction proceeds, according to them
hope to see some tv ads tbh

anyway, they do similar things with phone numbers too (not mtld). where you can buy a 2 digit mobile number etc, at a premium, obviously

i think a 1 character mobile web address would be keenly sought by as a fashion accessory by top firms.

mind you, i would imagine they'll bring out 2 character .mobis, etc first? :hehe:

i personally would rather they didnt

Only 36 per domain, highly sought after. It's basically a status symbol, like a castle in Beverly Hills. No, more on the level of a national landmark.

Here is a very old one, an internet provider that was around during the early days of the web: www.q.com

So how did PayPal, Qwest and Nissan get ahold of these badboys? Bribe the ICANN? It would be funny if in 1994 someone was like "Hey, I'll give you $500 if you let me register this one character domain."

I want to know that as well.

I think I heard a rumour nissan paid million + for the www.z.com

and I know for a fact that www.x.com has been around for ages, since liek paypal first started, I remember it been promoted at one stage.

Up until late 1993 it was valid to register single character domains. Since then ICANN put all remaning single char .com,.net,.org's in a reserved status. Any names registered prior to that were grandfathered in. If one should drop though (which is unlikely in these days of exclusive drops) it would not be available to re-register.

Agreed ... potentially ... as over the next several WEEKS, we will need to see exactly how mTLD spends much of its recent - Sedo Round I and Traffic auctions of premium (and, in some cases, former RFP) domains - MEGA proceeds :$: on bonafide, tangible advertising and promotions for the extension! :yell: :snaphappy: :imho:

During the Red Sox game on Fox last night, here locally I watched two very prominent ads - one was using the iPhone "to visit Weather.com!" and the other was to browse StateFarm.com "from anywhere!"!! :|
