Please forgive my inner 14 year old.

Launch date for the new .wang TLD is TBA, but there should be a thread for long-needed extension such as this.

Potential topics of discussion:
- What .wang do you want to get your hands on?
- Which .wang will be the biggest?
- Do you think there will be stiff competition for premium . wangs?

Stopping now before I get banned or at least drummed off stage.

I believe that Zodiac Holdings in Hong Kong/ Beijing China is aiming at a Chinese audience with this one, its pinyin for Chinese character ็ฝ‘. Translation for "wang" means "website" or "portal" in Chinese, they probably had that translation locked in long before we coined our slang. ;)

Quote From Wikipedia: "Unfortunately, due to restriction of the new gTLD applicant Guidebook, the Applicant is not allowed to pursue its more favorable single-char IDN string โ€œ.็ฝ‘โ€. Instead, the Applicant will have to adopt its hanyu pinyin "wang" (a way to transcribe Chinese characters into Latin script) form โ€œSTRINGโ€ which means โ€œwebsite or portalโ€.

The bonus for them is all the reg's they might get from those NPers with a fun sense of humor.

This could be the one to finally prick the .com "bubble", but if sales go limp it may just peter out.

How will it do?
It could swing either way.

Wang was an early commercial computer brand.

Extensions like these are the ones that make a mockery of the new gTLD launch and contribute to the lack of credibility of any websites using them. This free-for-all shall fail.

I wonder how much lawyers.wang will go for.

Most of the new gTLDs make a mockery of themselves.

In the end what matters is what you do with your .wang.
It needs to be developed.
You need to get traffic to your .wang and make sure that your .wang has a high uptime. Oh, and make sure you use a firewall to keep those nasty viruses at bay. I'll show my .wang but only in private if you show me your .wang first.

An unfortunate extension, uh, I mean gTLD, at least among English speakers.

But a boon for all those 14-year-old boys playing with their .wangs (on the net).

Perhaps the Chinese see this a bit differently?

I am not a fan of .wang myself but I can see why some might do everything in their power to grab one.
But at the of the day the .wang would most probably prove useless ;)
