All hype. Nothing in it for domainers. Nothing in it for mediocre names. Some might sell purely because of speculation, to other investors.

Just clueless.

Each head is a world. I sold one from Dubai for $ 150K. The important thing is to know how to choose and focus. Whoever tries can win. The one who doesn't try already lost!

I wish them all the best with this project and might visit it a tourist, too. I assume this is one of several plans in Saudi-Arabia to get rid of the dependancy of oil and to open their civil society. Great.

Just one more thing you could do deeper research. There is an applied Trademark "Neom" for many relevant fields like infrastructure, finance, ecological services etc. in favour of Public Investment Fund, 11452, Riyadh, SA.

I heard about Neom about four hours after it was announced. I was amazed by the scale of the project, thought about it for a few minutes, then grabbed a piece of paper to think up some domain names.

So about 20 minutes later, I tried regging 16 names, but 8 had already been taken. Some of the names I acquired were:

Thought of some more names in the next couple of days, but most were already taken. The goldrush had begun. Two years later I have more than 25 Neom names.

Avtar629: In this "area" of the world. Isn't it typical for businesses to go with .ae or .sa (especially .sa since this dev is in Saudi Arabia?)

A: From my understanding, .com TLDs are better for Global audiences. While .ae, .sa are for Local audiences. I lived in the ME for 10 years, most of the companies I did business with had both their countries TLD and a .com, .net, etc. that was forwarded to their countries TLD.

The largest phone and internet providers in Saudi (STC.com) and UAE (Etisalat.com) use .com. Both are owned by the governments of each country.

I like utopias a lot. But how long will it take to implement this one? Read: How long will domain investors have to renew their domains?
The deserts out there are already hottest spots on earth. Global warming will increase heat and drought. Who wants to move there?

But if Saudi Arabia can establish a Neom Freezone/Freeport, which will include Saudi Arabia, Egypt & Jordan, Saudi might have a winning formula for success. The Neom Freeport will allow Saudi to duplicate Dubai’s Jebel Ali Freezone/Freeport, one of the world’s largest ports. Jebel Ali Freezone is one of the main reason’s Dubai is on the map.

Why would the Neom Freezone be important economically? 8 - 10% of the worlds sea cargo travels through the Suez Canal. This would make the Neom Freezone along with the Port of Neom one of the best cargo ship’s “distribution stops” in the Middle East. The Gulf of Aqaba also has land access to Egypt, Jordan and Israel. Saudi does not do commerce with Israel, but Jordan and Egypt does.

Jordan and Israel are currently planning on building new faster railways from the Northern tip of the Gulf of Aqaba. This will allow cargo ships to deliver their cargo via the Gulf of Aqaba, then transport the cargo via rail to either the cargo’s final destination or to another cargo ship on the Mediterranean Sea without traveling through the Suez Canal. It costs a large cargo ship $235,000 USD to transit the Suez Canal.

I am one of the clients at NeomDomainNames.com mentioned by @Neom Smith. I’m glad to have the opportunity to list some domains on a dedicated site and have been impressed with the marketing ideas he is discussing with participants.

I feel optimistic about potential sales, though they may be a few years away yet.

While there are certainly risks, the project could be enormous. Neom has an area of 26,500 sq km with about 468 km of natural coastline. It is about 88% of the size of Belgium and about 128% the size of Israel. So it has the size of a small country.

However, this project reminds me to Masdar City in Abu Dhabi ten years ago which flopped, at least for domain owners. Thus still thinking about a domain investment in Neom.
