Should I get EPP code in advance?

Hi,

I have about three domains registered, which are totally personal and I have no plans to sell them. I am trying to develop them. The re-seller with whom the domains are currently registered, is quite professional with me since three years. So, so far no problem.

So, should I get EPP code and keep it safe somewhere away so that in future if I need, I can use without asking it from re-seller? Does EPP code remains same, or does it changes time to time?

Thanks

I believe how the EPP code is implemented, is different from registrar to registrar.

In my experience for example with Melbourne IT and Name, the EPP code is prominently displayed on your account all the time and they never change.

On other registrars, the EPP code is only generated when you click a button to send the EPP code to your email. If you don't use the EPP code sent to you, it expires after a few days. You then have to click the button again, and the registrar sends you another different EPP code. So in this case, jotting down the EPP code on a paper and keeping it safe under your drawer, would be useless.

Hi there, welcome to NP!

But i am lost, what is the reason for your question...if you haven't had any problems why do you want to transfer...unless you are with 1and1...!!! lol

cheers

Thanks everybody for reply. I guess I am going to ask for the EPP codes and will save it in some safe place.

As I said in my original post, I wanted to know EPP codes in case I need to transfer my domains out in FUTURE, and in that case, If I would have codes, I will not be at mercy of registrar. But it is just a case of "IF".

Thanks,

Well if the reseller is a crook then knowing the EPP codes won't help you at all. The reseller can just place a registrar lock on your domains and you are screwed. I think the problem here is that you don't trust the reseller. So why not transfer out to a domain registrar that you do trust? Do it now rather than later! Transfer out to an ICANN accredited registar like enom or directi.

Thanks, :) But for the time being, I think I am just going to leave things as it is, because registrar is good with me. I think I was just being whirlpooled into worst-case-scenario. (Need to stop reading legal-disputes-domain-forums and need to cut down time spent on google) :sorry:

Thanks again everyone..

It doesn't do any harm to have your EPP Code tucked away. It's more important that the domains are registered under your own name and email, and locked.

Unless the domain is unlocked at the time of transfer-request, then the EPP code will be useless.

And as registrars are _supposed_ to expire EPP codes, and some registries enforce that, it'll probably be incorrect by the time a transfer is needed.

The only real solution is to keep your domains with a registrar you trust, rather than (as many do) hopping between whomever is cheapest at renewal time.

If you have say 5 trusted registrars, its probably inevitable that you will do some hopping if any of them will suddenly offer rock bottom coupon discounts.

And sometimes, transfer prices are much cheaper than renewal prices. And i'm sure not everyone loves Godaddy, but if they come up with 1.99 transfers you will probably hop back to Godaddy, then transfer out again after a year.

And to give you some room for safety, always transfer out about 1 month before your domain expiry to give you ample time to argue with customer service in case there's suddenly an issue with EPP codes.
