Austria....lovely place.

Austria - Uncyclopedia, the content-free encyclopedia

โ€œI'm looking forward to seeing some kangaroos here!โ€
~ George W. Bush on Austria

โ€œWhere are all the Kangaroos?โ€
~ Every other American on Austria

Austria, "The land of Kangaroos", was so named by Australia during the years when Austria was exclusively used for kangaroo storage by the first Australian settlers. Austria's economy was hugely dependent on kangaroos fรผr their labour, fรผr their meat and fรผr fur (as sound-proofing for cellars) until the Great Kangaroo Epidemic. Today, Austria is insignificant almost to the point where most Americans doubt its existence or justifiably confuse it with another place on the map

It was via Sedo: ULA.in. Interestingly, it was someone in Italy, not India, who bought it -- I suspect they were an end user.

Its strange... one of my biggest LLL.in sales (just under $1000) was to a company in Germany last year. A name which most here would consider anti-premium... one which I picked up for about $15 a couple of years ago.

I could've probably got more than double.. they offered $100... and countered and they accepted right away. Later I found out it was quite a big car parts manufacturing company based in Germany. Did a bit of research and found that the LLL was an acronym of one of their top selling parts... but I didn't find any links from them to India - so it was quite strange why they chose a .in?!

Anyway, glad they bought it either way.

Congrats on the ULA sale.

You would be surprised how many companies from other countries use a lll.in as there companies main site. I have done searches on different combinations by hand of lll.in's before and companies in countries like Norway,Denmark,Germany and a few others use a lll.in as there companies website.

You're so correct. If you take a look at the .in/co.in sales in 2007 and 2008,you'll realize that while many of those sellers made a profit, they were selling some of their names for painfully low prices relative to their future potential. The buyers were definitely smart, and as you said "moved early".

As for the "premium" letters in lll.ins versus "non-premium", i think that discussion has misguided many domainers and its overrated. Yes premium letters are nice, but there are some premium LLL.ins with less than 12 acronyms on acronymfinder, which to me means they are not true "gems". To say that an lll.in is worth "very low $xx" because it has a non-premium letter like j or q in it is completely naive. YOu have to analyze the domain completely. How many acronyms does it have? whats coming up on google india searches? how many other tlds for the same LLL are on sale on sedo? whats estibot's appraisal?

the italian company that bought ula.in might've bought it to use to market their products in India...its an insightful move.

Personally I would say that .in growth is as sluggish as .us.
Both are large economies but laggard TLDs.

Actually sdsinc, .in adoption is almost universal, unlike .us

The issue w/ .us is that it will always be a fourth choice after .com / .net / .org

Whereas in India .in is second choice and changing fast to the first choice.

I do hope so Samit.
Do we have interesting stats available for .in ?
You see, .us is growing too, it's just that it's not catching up fast enough.

a few observations of mine vis-a-vis .in and .us

1) .US always had a weak foundation- america adopted .com informally as the country's main extension,so .us IMO never really had a good "home" in the US(except for premium names)..IN is home in INdia and people in INdia and worldwide are adopting and accepting it

2).US registrations are more limited than .IN- Its funny that the land of the free has its ccTLD in bondage(people who aren't US citizens or have business presence in the US can't register .us). this has definitely kept .us a stunted midget compared to other ccTLDs. .IN on the other had is widely available to everyone,so its potential by volume will surely outdo .us

3).IN has a larger market because .com is becoming a spent space for very good domain names-.in is gaining momentum currently IMO because people cant find or buy very good .coms, so they'll settle for a very good domain name in their ccTLD.

4).IN has good odds at succeeding- India has a huge population;.in renewal prices will drop soon; India is predicted to have the most internet users by 2013;India's interenet is relatively free compared to a country like CHina, and this will allow .in to keep growing and doing well at a healthy pace.

5)the games are just beginning- As i said earlier in this thread, some really good .in domain names were sold in 2007 and 2008 for painfully low prices. Those who are willing to hold for 3-6 years will no doubt hit some jackpots. Many more .in sales are ahead of us. .US sales activity seems very lukewarm these days.

Any new finds?

Very likely, and a good idea before this company might have decided to snag it: Freight forwarding, Stevedoring, Ship Chartering Shipping Agency in India. (I was actually guessing originally that this was the party buying it, so I based my negotiations on it being an end user. I was right about it being an end user, but wrong about who it was.)

HMT or hindustan machine tools was one of the major brands before liberalization. In our place, almost everyone would be wearing an HMT watch... Now I can't see them anymore... Hope the company is alive...
