If Google or Yahoo crawl your site and you are on the first page of either search engine, then you can get MASSIVE amount of hits to your site. Most people unless they have time and / or are desperate, usually look through the first 3 pages of a google or yahoo search results page. So, if you are link #1 or even on the first page, you can get a large amount of hits, more than any others on the second or third page and certainly more hits than those in the higher pages.

In this guide, I will give you some tips and try my best to educate you to building your site in an SEO friendly way that will get you a lot of hits!

Tip #1 – Be Bold!
Using Bold tags to define keywords in your website can initially get you ranked higher in the search engines, but don’t over use them and make a website look ugly by using them to much.

Tip #2 – Link Exchanges
Get as many websites as you can to link to your website, especially if they are high PR websites. If they are on the first 5 pages of a search engine, then they will be popular.
Link with those guys and you can get your website ranked better.

Tip #3 – Meta Tags
When coding your website, use Meta tags. Meta tags like description and most importantly keywords. Keywords and your site content is what the search engines go for. Your keywords define if a website sinks or floats.

Tip #4 – Title
Give your site a title using the html tags. That helps provide search engines with more information, you can also include the page name in the title tag for example, on Blue Dragon Designs I could use β€œBlue Dragon Designs – SEO Tips & Tricks.” That gives search engines more to work with and improve my rankings.

Tip #5 – Validate Your Code
Another thing when coding a website, validate your HTML using the HTML Validator at w3.

Tip #6 – Site Maps
I was hoping to keep it at only 5 tips but this one is just too important.
On large sites a site map is VERY important. Site maps are basically an index of all the pages on your website. If you have one of these then search engines can easily index your website and the site map will help your rankings.

That is all the tips I have for today, I hope they help and I hope you enjoyed this article.
Thanks and good luck,

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

bold face is an old school trick that doesn't do any good anymore.

link exchange is fine on a limited basis. google will discount all links derived from link exchanges if done excessively

W3 validation is not needed for SEO and doesn't have anything to do with SEO either

"Tip #1 – Be Bold!"

I think this technique will not work anymore :) Anyone can make a new site and bold all the KWs in hope to get better ranking.

"Tip #2 – Link Exchanges"

Some people think that only limited number of link exchanges are ok where others say that link exchanges are bad for sites as they try to artificially manipulate SERPs.

"Tip #3 – Meta Tags"

KW meta tag is no longer used by Google.

"Tip #4 – Title"

Title is one of the most important factors.

"Tip #5 – Validate Your Code"

Verifying the site may not help directly in improving ranking: but its good to verify as it can help us avoid coding issues/browser-compatibility-issues etc

"Tip #6 – Site Maps"

Sitemaps help SEs to understand better about a site structure/pages.

keyword tag in meta tags is no longer used, and for a long time I might add! It seems that tag is only good for spying!

Let's see # 1 is often quoted as useful but isn't. You need to check Google's SEO starter guide for this answer.

Let's see # 2 is also often quoted as effective but it isn't. This only will benefit you if the site linking to has better PR than yours. This takes way to much time to set up and manage. It just isn't worth it.

Let's see # 3 really shows your lack of SEO knowledge... Keywords Tag has no impact on rankings, however, the page description tag will affect how many searchers click through to your site from the SERP's.

Let's see # 4... Hmm... This is the most valuable piece of website space available. Don't waste including a business name here instead use a primary keyword phrase.

Let's see # 5 not a bad idea but I have seen many badly coded sites rank well.

Let's see # 6 The sitemap is a very useful tool. The HMTL sitemap helps the visitor. The XML sitemap helps the search engine properly crawl your website. So it can be a very useful tool.

This post is a good example of why I never recommend forums for getting solid SEO advice. A newbie can come along and read this and might assume it is accurate... Get your SEO advice from those who are proven leaders in their field and not form forums and you will do very well.

Domain name is another ranking factor to consider. (keywords in domain)

Domain name is another ranking factor to consider. (keywords in domain)

That's a good point about keywords in the domain name. But it has limited value for a larger site that targets many keywords. However, I always recommend doing this even if it is only one keyword phrase.
