Depending on the keywords you're want to have good rankings for you can with basic SEO optimization do it yourself. You'll need to do some learning on your own but you'll get the results you're after.

You could PM me the keywords you're after and tell you how competitive your keywords are and how feasible it would be to tackle this on your own so you can save the amount you would spend on SEO services which don't come cheap.

Professional firms and consultants charges can ad up significantly.

I've found www.sitepronews.com & www.webpronews.com (no affiliation) to be very helpful. They have lots of SEO news over there. People in the forums are very helpful. I'm rather new to SEO scene; but what I have learned is that proper SEO is constantly changing! What worked great for someone a year ago might get you banned today. Make sure you're getting updated info!!!
