Hi-

Looking for a SEO friendly CMS that's not too hard to learn. I do have some web designing skills and tend to catch on to these things quickly. I don't mind paying for one either. I've all ready looked into Joomla, Drupal and some of the other free ones, but am not sure how SEO friendly they are.

Basically I'd like to know if there is a CMS out there specifically built from the ground up for SEO, and some users comments and advice on such.

Thanks in advance, rep will be added for helpful direction.

Peace,
Vik

Hands down, your best bet is www.cmsmatrix.org
it's a free site that lets you compare all CMS side by side, including previews, demos, etc.
Best of luck!

Hi IB,

I all ready checked that site out when I searched earlier and found your recommendation from another post. It's definitely a nice comparison site, but I'm looking to hear from users here at NP that use a CMS touted as specifically designed for friendly SEO.

Thanks! rep added ( as I should have the first time I saw you list that site) :)

Peace,
Vik

I've used most of them.

Wordpress seems to be the best out of the box. Drupal second. Joomla third.
But this is just from my experience, the learning curve might be different for you.

I've been told e107/CMS made simple/php-fusion are much improved.
Have to check them out myself, will let you know how it goes.

If you want to compare cms also see http://opensourcecms.com

Good Luck.

Do you mean the above in terms of ease of use? Or your experience as SEO friendly? I don't remember where I read this but there was an article about how Joomla wasn't built with SEO in mind. I've since seen some CMS touted as being built from the ground up specifically with SEO as an important factor. I'm interested in hearing from people who have used such CMS and their opinions on SEO friendly claims by these programs.

I'll check out the above site. Thanks. rep added.

If you are going to promote this site till the end then I think a ground up script would be a better choice for it. It will give you more uniqueness and flexibility in long run.

My favourite is PostNuke - but it's not for the first time user to a CMS. But I've got it running on at least four dozen websites (so many I've lost count) and I've got them all ranking on the first page on google for their targeted keywords. I've used it since 2003.

But in the end - all the major CMS packages handle seo duties pretty well. Lots of it comes down to the user and how they use the CMS. You can have the best most perfect SEO CMS but still fail to rank if you don't use proper keyword density, poor titles, don't use alt, title= etc etc.

Vik,

I only mean that in terms of seo - out of the box.

WP needs a metatag generator and a lot of css hacking to get it perfect.

Drupal needs a lot of work to get the URLs as per requirement and still has the node.

Joomla 1.0.12 requires some core edits and a lot more for human readable urls.

Adding a meta tag widget to WordPress is hardly a big deal, and you can modify its url structure to be more SE-friendly. I can't see any real problems with WP from an SEO perspective; is there anything other than the lack of native support for meta tags putting you off?

Thanks Whitebark- I'll check it out. I realize there is a lot to consider. I just wanted to start out right and not have to change down the road. I'd rather take the time to learn something a bit harder and get it done right than go for ease of use ( which will still require time and effort) and be dissatisfied. Rep added :)

Thanks WWS- It's not that I'm against using Wordpress or Drupal, Joomla, etc.. Just wanted to know if there was something out there that others have used that I wouldn't need to modify in terms of SE friendly. Seems to me that if I am going to develop sites might as well use a system that was built with SE friendly in mind as opposed to trying to modify it. rep added :)

MODx has some pretty good SEO support....I really like the CMS as a whole personally...give it a look. Its a great one - lots of ajax sprinkled about too. I think youll like it :)

If youre not happy with any suggestions it never hurts to dig through a directory like Codango.com and look at whats out there....
