Selling to holders of similar names...

If you own a name say cat.com

Is it usually ok to offer to sell the domain name to the owner of cats.com?

I am just curious I have a name of a site that is very similar to the name of another more sucessful site. I didn't know this when I bought it and the more sucessful site does not possess a trademark for the name. (it is not like a huge branded name either, it is just developed)

Since the bigger site isnt an established trademark it shouldnt be a problem legally. As long as you dont approach a company like google trying to sell them gugle, then you should be fine. Will you succeed though, thats another issue
