Do you buy second hand domains at sedo (or elsewhere) for your project ideas? I have just run a search at sedo for a keyword I am interested and all I see is garbage for $x,xxx. How do you filter through that? Seriously I have better options registering anew.

I know how to pick a random domain when I see significantly more value than what it is selling for, but how do I go about that when I need something specific?

Posting it in newbie section as I have no idea...

Most of people here buy only "second hand" domains :)
If I understand you well the question is: where to find a specific "second hand" domain for a not very high price?
If yes, you could create a thread in "Domains wanted" section here at NP and people would send you their "second hand" domains for consideration, depending on your budget.

Go to Name.com, you'll find specific section with expiring and deleted domain, all starts from $10.99

If what you mean by second hand domain is a domain that have expired and are put up for resale because they were not renewed, you can check name.com.

Also go to dynadot.com and click "expiring domains" pretty good list. GoDaddy has a huge list everday also under their auctions section, also Sedo.com. Caution that with Dynadot and GoDaddy even if you buy the owner has a few days to renew still. 50-50 chance you will get the name. I think some watch to see if others bid before renewing.
