Whats the best way to get your names into the search engines. I know you can submit them manualy, but you then have to wait about 2 months to get them in. How do others do it?

Thanks,

Scribs.

The views expressed on this page by users and staff are their own, not those of NamePros.

The best way is to get linked by another site that is frequently crawed by the search engines. It's pretty quick. I mentioned a link for a brand new site on this forum and within a few days it was indexed by Google.

Yep, just put your link in your signature here on this site and you'll have your site on around 50 pages that are crawled by Google.

So....

If I change my Sig to something like this:

mobilephonevirus.com

Mobile phone viruses and hoaxs are going to be the new threat in 2004.

Buy it now!

google will crawl through to that?

Bur I'm gussing there will not be a desciption or any meta tags, if i just have a name. How will it get listed?

Thanks for the help,

Scribs.

What happens is, Google will crawl this thread, see your link and follow the link to crawl your site as well. Google doesn't use meta tags, but it does read what the link says for search result purposes.

So for instance you post a link like this

Mobile Phone Virus , Google counts this link as a result for "Mobile Phone Virus"

Search around for "Google Bombs" for more information on how Google indexes links.

OK great i got it...

Don't think too many people would be happy if i had a sig with ALL of my names though!!

lol

I'll just change my sig each day! Thanks for the tip.

Yes, and really I'm not suggesting that using forums to build links to your site is the way to go. I mentioned it more as an example. You'll get indexed by Google, but its unlikely to help your search results. You're better off finding someone in your industry that is willing to swap links with you.

Well there is one catch in that Namepros.com only has a PR of 1 (which I find incredibly strange and wrong).

Google limits how many pages and how often it spiders a site based on the PR.

I think webdesigntalk mirrors the content here and it seems to have a PR of 2, but this still isn't very good at all.

Are people just keeping these boards a secret? More people need to link to these forums to boost the PR rating.

That's true aww. When I first got the NamePros.com domain, it had a PR of 0 and it remained that way until somewhat recently. WebDesignTalk has a PR of 5 and posts are also mirrored there.

Posting a link here won't help your own search ranking much, but I suspect it will get it indexed in due time. Here's my little indexing experiment.

PR

I bought some crapy domain yestaday www.cathmem.org It a name from some old prep school, but it has a google Page Rank of 4 and is in yahoo, dmoz and google.

If i create a site with all my domain on and point this URL to it will that get my names indexed more quickly?

Thanks,

RJ, if the previous owner of NamePros.com did something "evil" with it (like run a cross-linking link farm for example) Google may have blacklisted the domain preventing it from having rank to give to others. It certainly feels like that has happened.

You might want to drop Google a line under their webmaster section and see if they will do anything about it. The lowest level I've seen any site a year old is a 3, most are 4's. They really think you have zero links, though they index 5000+ pages here!

This forum technically should be at least a 6 IMHO.

My 1usenet domain is a PR6, and its nowhere near as popular as NamePros, which I think thrives by word of mouth.

Here's some helpful info on getting into Google.

One of the articles mentions RJ's suggestion and lists some others too..

The first owner of the domain was some kind of "fash cash" huckster. I wouldn't doubt if that's the reason the domain has always had problems getting pagerank. We don't even come up first in a search for 'namepros'

You can download the Google toolbar from
http://toolbar.google.com/

Then whenever you visit any site, you would be able to see the ranking given to it by Google.

never noticed how poor the PR at namepros is. wow...

RJ you definitely need to contact google, because I know my personal site ohashi.us has less than 10 links in yet keeps a PR4 and many of the sub-areas have PR3.
