Hi,

Could anyone tell me who you would contact (the type of skilled person I'd need) to build your own search engine to compete with the likes of google and yahoo (would it be a source coder I'm looking for?, or an algorithm specialist????). I know it's laughable but I think in theory as I don't know any programming I've thought of a novel way of filtering search results for a more niche type of searcher/group and I'd like to give it a go until someone says it's impractical or unnecessary.

Thanks for any help/direction in advance.

you'd also need to find someone with plenty of cash - lots of numbers to crunch and computers to feed...

you need lots of money to compete with google and yahoo, there's more to it than just the search engine script, skills, you need money to run it as well, maintain it at least and you need to pay salaries of people to approve entries.
there are already similar attempt one practical thing to do is fetch the database from these 2 rather than building it from scratch.

Don't try to compete is the key. Be innovative. Find out what google currently lacks in terms of serving relevent content in a specific niche, then refine your own engine to success in this area, promote and market and you should be good to go.

it's impractical and unnecessary.

Lol Shockie.

Thanks for the input everyone, the big money investment has put me off a bit, so I'll just put this little idea/project on the back burner for the time being, but I will still actively peruse and read up on search engine/algorithm forums and discussions.

:)

you might also want to spend a little time reading up on starting a business (especially getting funding) so when you do come up with a great idea it'll take less time to get it into motion.

You will need essentially one thing:

A LARGE budget.

You will need to pay for programmers if you can't yourself.

Multiple servers to host the engine + techs to manage the server 24/7 to ensure reliability.

A large part of your budget toward massive advertising.

And the some towards other things you may need to take into account.

If you want to build a search engine, then you can hire a programmer at a freelance site.

Okay first of all I will move this thread to Web Development wanted.

Now for the topic. I think I can code a search engine for you. With your algo. I love playing with data and implementing the algo's in it.

Let me know your logic of sorting this out and I can code the piece of code that will do the trick.

As for fetching results I think we can manage it with meta search stuff ;)

Thanks.

Why not just use a google custom search engine, make money, and let them carry the searches for you. Make it look like whatever you want.

Not pretty, but I did this: http://searchtlds.com.

The filters I use are for the specific extensions, but you can just as easily add your niche search terms as well.
