Search Engine Development

Greeting all...
I am interested in knowing what might be involved in developing a search engine. I'm not to clear on this algorithm thingy...
I am slightly upset with major search engines and there business practices so I thought that It would be a good idea to try and make one better than Google... I know it can be done becasue the guys a t google can't be smarter than all the other programmers in the world.

Any insight how I could start this would be helpful.

DomainBlasters: I admire your ambition. The problem however though is that they do have some very capable people working at Google. Not saying they are smarter than all the other programmers in the world. Matter of fact, programming probably is not THE most important factor. The best programmers do not necessarily have the best handle of search algorithms. They DO employ some of the most qualified Statisticians and others who can come up with the mathematical algorithms that make Google a success. And THEN they have the programmers who come up with the programmatical algorithms to implement the mathematical ones. It's quite a complicated process. If you go through their Jobs section you will see that they only hire the 'cream of the crop' and are willing to pay for it.
