Russia Wants To Censor The Internet
from the notice-a-pattern? dept

Get the feeling that folks in Russia are a bit jealous of China's Great Firewall? Suddenly, we're seeing lots of proposals that seem to be designed to limit what folks can do online. Just recently we wrote about efforts to require WiFi users to register with the government, and now Russian prosecutors are trying to extend "anti-extremism" laws to the internet. The laws apparently forbid newspapers from publishing "extremist material," at the risk of being shut down completely. Prosecutors are hoping that an internet version of the law would require ISPs to block access to any sites that include "extremist" content. Of course, extremist content is defined rather broadly. It seems pretty clear that this is just an attempt to try to stifle speech the government doesn't like.

Hardly he revival of communism, it failed. Even China know it sucks so they dont use it. Still trying to figure out why they call themselves communists when they arent.

Anyway what do you expect, in Russia the government can just seize a billion $ company for no reason, and they will unless you are a friend of the powerful people. So internet censorship is hardly a big deal for them...

True communism has never been used. It won't work. Russia is more like a capitalist/socialist and a bit of dictatorship country.

Wasn't the USSR true communism? Any country that used communist economic policies which is the basis of communism has failed. China has a market capitalist economy, even though its heavily regulated, so they should not be called communists.

Karl Marx = failed

China is more of a military oligarchy, IMO. Nevertheless, the main search engines were kind enough to set a precedent by saying, "Heck yeah, we'll help you control the flow of information to your oppressed citizens for money." Pretty soon, they will have every dictatorship in the world clamoring for their own filtration system.

No doubt there will be a corporate entity set up for the sole purpose of helping dictatorships filter out controversial info. nonewsisgoodnews dot net is available, lol. They will make a LOT of money.

At the risk of turning this into a social theory discussion, not really. The USSR
tried, but it never really attained the level of communism Marx theorized.

They could very well try to censor 'Net use in Russia. But when there's a will,
there's a way.
