Rod Ryan Show in Houston slams domainers

This morning I turned on Houston's Rod Ryan Show on 94.5 The Buzz and heard domain talk!

Domain talk on one of Houstons most listened-to radio shows? I was quite surprised.

Rod Ryan was talking about the enormous price that pizza.com sold for. And went on to discuss other big sales, like business.com and sex.com.

He then went on to explain how he had to buy the domain for his show from a cybersquatter.

He said that he has seen domains sell for large amounts and that whenever he gets a good idea, he goes to GoDaddy to register it. He owns about 10-20 domains.

But what worried me was how he described the industry to the audience of the (arguably) top morning show of the USAs 3rd largest city.

He described registrars and domainers as 'rapists.' That we're all out to take advantage of other people. He seriously threw the word 'rape' around about 7 times. Registrars rape you with all their upsells. Domainers rape you by cybersquatting.

If I knew their number, I would have called in. I don't normally listen to the show and I was in my car. So I settled on writing him an email that shed a nicer light on our industry.

I'll let you know if he responds.

How does this kind of publicity make you feel?

Just browse into the appraisal thread or the legal thread, you will see 75% of the threads regarding similar domains, TM domains, or the TM names with ridicoulous additions in the name...basically infringing domains :(

It is more then common that people like him (even he has domains himself) are going in circles because of the cybersquatting situation, as someone who is not involved in the DN business i would act the same way......

As it comes to registrars...there is in my knowledge no way for them to prevent the registration of a TM domain name, just don't blame it on them(unless it is a name like "google someting or dell something, but i think a couple registrars have that in place allready)

It is the sole responsibility of the person who registers the name !!!!

I leave it here, up for you guys to decide......

Peace and soul

Frank

I'd be interested in knowing what domain he bought for the show and what he paid. Also, it would be interesting to get a peek at his 10-20.

Maybe if he understood domain names and the internet, he would of seen the value of Pizza.com and the other mentioned domains.

It's funny how pissed people get when they see "somebody" owns the domain they want. At the point he wanted the domain, and noticed it was registered, I wonder if he thought if anybody Else might want it as well? That is called DEMAND, which makes something valuable no matter what it is.

That's why he's a radio guy and not a domainer.

Let's put this into perspective shall we....let's just say your 5 year old and you go to the park. The swings are your kids favorite...all of them are taken but you notice a kid on the end is standing there just holding the chain. You ask him if it's ok to use the swing and he says $1000. Now of course since there are none available in this limited supply of swings you realize you have two choices...either pay $1000 OR your kid walks away crying.

Admit it...the kid holding the swing is a BRAT. There is NO basis when domains were created that they be resold and used for parking. There is no inherent legal right that domainers have by registering a domain that it's theirs to do with as they please.

It would be nice to see ICANN force domain usage or give up the domain. Oddly people seemed very much FOR the idea when dot mobi went forward with it but are against it with their existing portfolios of dotcoms.

The reality...most non-domainers you describe domaining too frown upon the practice. Common sense would tell anyone that domaining has a certain amount of unfairness to the general public.

What business doesn't. If I want to purchase a building lot, and houses go up around it, and I still do not build, what gives anyone the right to tell me to build if I keep paying my property taxes. ICANN should not force anyone to do anything, Who is to define what a real site should be, it would solve nothing, but add an extra element too parking pages. I would like an apartment on park place, so if some offshore billionaire uses it one week a year, he should be forced to give it up for nothing to the US GOV?

Thing about domains is not everyone has paid reg fee for their domains. What if someone really wanted a domain, paid $10,000 for it, spent their whole budget? They can't wait a year, save up and develop. With .mobi it was before the fact, but not after you shell out $10K for a domain should you change the rules.
