new gtlds Rightside To Sell Premium Domains With $10 Renewals

Rightside announced today a pricing promotion on most of its premium domain names. The domains will be sold at premium prices but will carry a $10 renewal rate.

The reduced renewal and transfer costs will last for the lifetime of the domain registration. The registrant will be able to benefit from their domain’s promotional price indefinitely, up until its deletion. And should they transfer the domain to someone else, the new owner will also be able to renew and transfer the domain at the reduced cost.

This is a big step in the world of new gTLDs.
What do you think of this move? Are you going to buy some new gTLDs now that subsequent renewals are almost free?

So this is not their top tier domains for starters. I still think these 2nd tier domains are very hard sell in the $xxxx region and above. Will still be very hard to recoup the investment regardless of the renewal fee or not. Might work if there are some great combos in there but doubt it.

Don't see much value in that promo. I'm not sure why would I purchase a domain for $x,xxx, that I most likely won't sell with a profit. Though I agree with @vivaldi that it might work for some great combos

I think the registries are adjusting because they are forced to.
They are also trying to get more business from domainers because the end users are balking.

They are starting to get the right idea....but.....
Here is the problem. Most of those domains still are not what I would consider "Premium". The prices will still be too much even without high renewal costs.

There are some terrible domains in that list that will be hard to sell even at a $10 renewal fee.

z3.actor
oklahomacity.actor
northkorea.actor
mississippischools.actor
tennesseebases.airforce
aerospacemedicinespecialist.airforce
nuclearweaponscentre.airforce
ww1veterans.army Lots of WW1 veterans just itching to build a website one this one!
synagogues.army

So they are selling the junk domains in junk gtlds for more than reg fee.

.actors .airforce .army and .attorney are the only gtlds on the list that I've seen.

Big deals....thanks

How about getting rid of your $50,000 yearly renewal fees and just go with an upfront fee then standard renewals fees. That would help everyone more than selling the used toilet paper that no one wants in the first place.

Renewal fees have been the biggest constraint to investors in new gTLDs.

This is surely good news for some especially endusers who otherwise would have to face off-putting renewal fees.

No thanks. Ntlds are enough. It's late.

How much would AustinDivorceAttorney.com go for ?
Would AustinDivorce.Attorney fetch more ?

I dont't know, but I noticed there are only 2 "divorce attorney" end user sales since 2009 (plus 6 reseller).

IMO, it would be hard to make a profit with these less-than-premium domains.

I can't wait to see the results of this "SALE"!

I think I only got a partial list, but there are still 65,000 domains in the list that I got. I wonder how many of those will sell. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say 65 will sell, maybe.

Someone grew half a brain, now bring the purchase price down on all names to a reasonable amount and you will be considered to have a full load, the greed of these registrars has been their own undoing, the domainers aint gonna play this game. I don't care how much how kids ...........'Are gonna love em'

Aren't they just copying the success of .CLUB doing the same thing. I bought 2 "premium" 3L .CLUB domains for $118.86 each which both renew at $10.30 in December. I think .CLUB's promotion was a tremendous success. It may still be ongoing.

Premium domains that carry the price category β€œPlatinum” are not eligible. Special renewal pricing doesn’t apply to premium domains purchased prior to or after the promotional period.

Wow! How did I not figure to call my best domains "Platinum". Premium is for suckers :D

It's like looking for a car in the junkyard. Have you guys/girls looked at those domains? There is a very small handful that I could see selling, maybe, just maybe.

sweatshirt.airforce I got my eye on this gem! I just hope that it's less than what a sweatshirt costs.

Next will be the "AAA+++Platinum Elite Double Premium" domains going on sale for just an arm, not an arm and leg. Oh but just for a week. Anybody that did pay an arm and leg before the discount is SOL and an arm and leg.

I would be pretty pissed if I bought one of their semi-premium domains and had to still pay more than a standard reg fee for renewals. I think they should give those people the discount too.

How many years are they going to hold onto those $50,000 per yr domains? Come down off the high horse rightside. How many end users are buying into this crazy pricing structure?

Do they have diamond domains (or Diamains for short) reserved even for later? )

These guys are running the things as a manual for "How Not to Run a Business". Kill the reputation, kill the trust, shave off the wool until you kill the sheep.

This would be beneficial to end users but doesn't affect domain investors at all. All premium pricing is just registrars saying "we want the profit of a domain investor with none of work involved"

You would think that there is a business degree or two in the bunch.

Do they read the forum? That might get them more in touch with the market then listening to their marketing team.
Nobody wanted these domains at the old price, i still think they are going to be a very hard sell at almost any price.
Is there a market for .airforce? .Actor? .Attorney? Namebio and DNPric.es both have zero sales data for all 3 of these extensions.

.airforce has 330 domains reg'd
.actor has 2,226
.attorney has 8,328

So the total for all 3 gtlds reg'd is 10,884 and they have a list of 65,000+ domains reserved for this "SALE".

Good luck with that sale. NO BODY WANTS THESE GTLDS.

slick move...

basically, the gltd registries are domainers now and they are selling you the same names, that you won't buy from other domainers in .com, net, org, etc.

imo....
