i'm thinking of starting a forum for people at my school but whats the best method to make people join? just ask my friends to join? whats the best way?

Since your potential initial user base is fairly limited don't expect it to be big in a hurry.
Make up some flyers and put them on bulletin boards at your school.
If you have a changing room post some there and ask a member of the opposite gender to post some in their changing room.

Over time it can grow with new students coming in.

Do you have a school newspaper? Maybe you could talk to the staff about writing a small article about it or even placing an ad in the paper. Keep us posted! Best of luck.

i'd prefer not to let the teachers know that it exists, theres going to be a Teacher section where people just badmouth their worst teachers, so if they saw that... not a good thing.

If you are going to exclude groups within the focus audience then I'm afraid you may be out of luck are far a growing your forum.
