You should be able to add more reg time to a domain with no problems, but contact your registrar if you don't see how to do that in your account.
Depending on your registrar, you may have to wait 60 days before you can transfer the domain to another registrar. Generally there is no good reason to do this for a new registration. If you sell the domain you can just transfer it to the account of the new owner at the same registrar. After the 60-day period they can transfer it to another registra if they want and the domain is a type that can be transfered.
well for one is because their control panel is always acting up on my account and i am not satisfied with their support so thinking transfering some domains out.
but my question is say my domain is regged on Aug. 19, 2009 and i transfer it today(sept.21,2009) to another registrar that will make the expiration Aug. 19, 2011 or Sept. 21, 2011? sorry for the very noob question.

I think Godaddy is the only provider that will let you change the renewal date of a domain. Otherwise the date is always the same unless the domain expires and is dropped. Then it would be from the first day of being registered again.
You keep the amount of registration time you have now and then get at least another year when you transfer it.
