Well, I went to shout at the company that hosted one of my domains today but it turned out that the domain was suddenly transferred to the "REGISTRY-HOLD" status as of a few days ago.

I've since sent them a question and I'm waiting for a reply but do you guys happen to know what would cause this to happen out of nowhere like this?

I'm afraid I'm a little unfamiliar with this situation.

Thanks.

I think its when its pending deletion or renewal.

That usually means you didn't pay the renewal fee.

The domain doesn't expire until 12/23/2005.

I'm not that bad guys. ;)

I still haven't heard a thing from Namecheap. :td:

Another issue could be your domain is a spam site and someone reported you to your registrar.

We do run a free hosting/email website but there are so many restrictions that any amount of spam should be very small. I'd still think at some point or another Namecheap would inform me of this - or at least inform me when I ask.

Some registrars are so strict that a single spam will cause you to go into onhold status until the investigation is over.

The other issue could be, you're hosting some controversial sites.

Well, is it typical of a company not inform the domain owner of what is going on even when asked? I've not heard a word from Namecheap, and for someone who has over 100 names with them, I will be taking my business elsewhere. If the name is under investigation then fine, but at least let me know something - it's been down for days and I submitted a request 24 hours ago.

I am also using namecheap and they responded quite quickly to my queries. Are you certain that your email addresses are valid?

The email address I contact with is [email protected].

I've double checked contact information so I know that is not the issue. It's the same details I use on my 100 other names with Namecheap.

I sent a support request via their form the first time so I know that is a nonissue as well. I sent them a second one and finally received the "we don't know what's going on so you'll need to contact Enom at 3 different addresses to find out" reply. I love how the company I have the domain with cannot even tell me what is going on regardless or whether or not they are a reseller with Enom.

Hey Denver, as the other stated the registrar can put a domain on RH if: a)
the domain expired, or b) the domain violated that registrar's terms or got a
notice regarding a complaint for it.

It so happens that Namecheap's owner, Richard Kirkendall, is also a Namepros
member. PM "enetwork".

Denver,

Namecheap is not a true registrar, they are reseller for enom.
So they refered you to them to sort out the issue. Good luck.
BTW registry-hold is not the same as registrar-hold. With such as status the registrar cannot do anything. Perhaps you will have to contact the registry (Verisign for .com).
Wait for enom response. I believe 'hold' status if often a result of some legal action or dispute.

Yikes! Thanks for pointing out the difference, sdsinc, I forgot about that!

Yes, Registry-Hold is at the Registry level, and that's "worse" than a registrar
having a domain put on "Registrar-Hold".

Something definitely happened to cause the VeriSign COM NET Registry to put
a domain on such. Kindly clarify if it's on Registrar-Hold or Registry-Hold, the
latter can especially make a difference.

Thanks, but I was aware that they are a reseller as I acknowledged before. Perhaps I expect to much by expecting help from them since I did purchase my services with them. Do they palm all of their support off to Enom the same way they do with me? If you cared about customers why not help the situation because I'm sure they can find out quicker than me.

It's under REGISTRAR-HOLD.

[Edit]

I purchased this site during summer, the move has been a mess and I just recently received the last details of the site. Now, I'm wondering if the owner has witheld something from me and knew this was coming.

Sigh, there's always that possibility, Denver. :(

Anyway, have you tried contacting "enetwork" about this? Most likely there's
a legal dispute against the domain name in question, just have to find out how
it happened.

I'm very worried about the situation now and I cannot seem to get ahold of anyone. This isn't exactly something I just want to go to sleep on.

^I know the feeling, It was like that when my host dissapeared with $7,000 of my dollars.

I may very well have discovered the issue. I was browsing around the site through the IP address and noticed that the script is showing an invalid license # warning. I had already checked logs and it appears no Spam was sent out either.

The guy I purchased the site from originally owned and then sold off the script. I'm willing to bet that this is the cause of all of my problems. If that is the case then he'll be getting a very ugly email and Paypal chargeback filed first thing.
