Recommendations for Wordpress template for minisites

Can anybody recommend some nice clean and effective themes suitable for Wordpress-based minisites? Either free or paid for?

There are just too many to be able to point one out and say try this. You might try narrowing your search by example. Search on google for some popular keywords and make a list of minisites you find near or at the top of the serps. Then look through them to see if they're using free templates. Build a list of the ones that are free and still rank well. Then use that list to choose from when you build your minisites.
