I recently registered www.astronautilus.com, the name of a band. Their official site is entirely unrelated to their band's name (www.modelcitizens.org).

My domain already shows up on the 2nd page of google (parked @ND) among 70,000+ listings when you type their band's name in (their official site is 2nd or so overall).

OVT w/o EXT of ~224.

The band is still indie, so they don't have a label backing them to purchase the domain, but I imagine they have a bit of money available to purchase such an important part of marketing.

The initial email offered $20 (I'm certainly hoping for more than that...), with the comment 'i am willing to negotiate'.

Where do you think I should go from here? Thanks in advance for any advice!

If you registered the name of their band on purpose, knowing they'd probably want it... I would let it go pretty cheap out of just being nice. Maybe $200 or something. Indie bands aren't exactly loaded usually. It's all up to you.

All depends on traffic and revenue. How many uniques do you get per day? Per month?

Registered it a week ago, averaging about 4 uniques a day, assumed just from type-in since it's still climbing google.

I'd let it go for $50. You make a decent profit, and you give it to the rightful owners.

IF you're counting on them becoming big, and making money off the domain, it probably wont happen.

They'll probably fork over $200 but not much more. It's not worth anything except reg fee unless they buy it, so it'd be best to give it to them while they're still small and can't afford to sue you for the name.

You could offer to lease the name to them and move their content over to your site. If you do development, you could ask to be their exclusive webmaster or designer in exchange for the name. If they get REALLY BIG you will be in the money and have your foot in the door for other bands/record labels as well.

Good luck!
