Hi all

I have received an offer of $500 for my domain headtoheart.com. It is approximately 5 1/2 years old. The website has not been on the internet for approximately 1 year. The name could serve the health, self-improvement, psychology, ??? sectors.

Would like a realistic appraisal.

Thanks

Ron

I would take that 500$ with a smile. I highly doubt that domain name would get any higher than that amount.

Without development this is an excellent price for the domain.

Go with your head and not your heart, take the offer.

Best of luck!

I see that it's taken in other extensions: .net .info .biz .name .us
It's likely you are dealing with the owner of one of these alternate names.
Also try research the E-mail address and compare with the whois of the other registered names, if you know who the other party is you have more leverage.
And make sure it's not the appraisal scam
I believe the offer is worth considering. Good luck :)

If their first offer was $500 out of the blue (assuming you haven't been negotiating with them to get that price), then (in my experience) they'll be willing to pay $800, possibly slightly more, for this kind of a name. That's the number I would counter bid at.
Is it a Sedo offer, or private offer through email?
If you HAVE been negotiating, and raised it up to this $500 price, it's a decent price and personally I'd accept it. Negotiation is key, especially if it's a first offer. They might offer 500, and their limit is 700. Or - as just happened with my domaining pard - they might offer 600, and be negotiated to 5,000. Takes some skill and some fleshing-out.

It's a brandable name, would be nice to find out who wants it and why. But without that info, and based on the fact that it's a 3-word domain name and there are many possible variations of it for sale and also avail to reg, you don't want to ask too high a price or they'll just go elsewhere. If I were to appraise this for end user only, I'd say $700 - 900 is the very most you'd get, and from a very interested buyer.

Thanks to all

Bannen - the offer was an e-mail out of the blue asking if I would be interested in selling. I replied with make me an offer. The offer was $500.

The individual is an author who also owns a small publishing company. His email indicates that he is acting on behalf of a client..

SdsInc - thanks for the whois idea. The .biz, .info, and .us sites are all owned by a woman author who has written a book called Journey From Head to Heart. I suspect that the man who contacted me is acting on her behalf.

Any other suggestions (negotiating etc.) are much appreciated and thanks so much for the advice so far.

Ron

Well you can negotiate with him for around $1200.
never easy to evaluate such brandables. but as this might be the only real customer u might get, put it around 1200 and settle near 1000.

The other part of the equation is: how much is the name worth to YOU? For example, I have Bannen.com, which is worth maybe high xxx or low x,xxx at the most to resellers... yet I wouldn't sell it for even 20K. A lot of people feel the same way about certain of their names. If your dn is dear to you, you need to decide what the absolute smallest amount $ is that you'd say 'yes' to.

My domaining partner, as mentioned above, had a $600 offer for one of her names last week; but it was a very personal name she didn't want to let go of. She was going to ask 10K for it; I said, 'So if they offered you 7K, you'd say NO?' She had to think for awhile, then she decided she would accept 5K for it, but it didn't feel good to accept any less. Keep in mind that this is a name that would be worth maybe $50 on the reseller market. It was an end user, very motivated since his business was based around a product with the same name as her dn. She wasn't trying to scam him out of more cash, she sincerely wanted to keep the name for further development and felt that any selling price would have to be high and really do something for her life, before she'd sell.
-- The buyer finally agreed.

Based on my gut, now that I've checked into your dn and the lady's book, I would think a 'sweet spot' (a little higher than she might want to pay, a little lower than you might want to get, but will still go through as a sale) would be $1200. That's what I'd ask, altering my above estimate with this new information.

If the dn doesn't mean much to you, then the decision is easier, settle for whatever buys you enough beer and ho's for your usual weekend of debauchery :)

Is it advisable in negotiating to let him know that I know about the book, the obvious tie-in and the other domains that she has bought or not mention it at all and just throw the 1200 at him?

Thanks for all the help!

Thanks for this interesting thread and the contributions. I really learnt something from the suggestions about the whois being followed through and changing the appraisal. This is what I hope to gain from reading and contributing.

ask them to increase their offer to $700
Sell it to the author/writer/publisher of the book "Journey From Head to Heart"
maybe ask for a link or a banner, i'm sure they'll develop.
at least get an autographed copy of the book

Personally, I would take the $500, but if that's their 1st offer, try & get around the $700 to $800 mark if possible.

A $500 offers is good, just look to get it up to around $800 from there and you've done fine :)

IMO no - as the other party will think you are trying to milk him as much as possible ;)
Just try to settle for a price you deem reasonable but be gentle.
