Ok, I developped a 'rate my picture' clone website, and this is getting a fair amount of visitors daily (around 300/400), just from google traffic.

I have adsense installed on the site, but this is actually bringing in very little money (maybe around $1.5 a day).

The question is how do I go about monetizing this site? How do sites like rate my picture actually make money???

I had a look at ratemypicture.com, and I can't see they're doing anything particularly different (adsense... same format). In fact, I am getting a similar ranking in Alexa... (around 500,000)

Have I taken this site as far as it can go? or is there something I don't know???

it would help if you linked us to the actual site, so we can see where you are placing the ads, the color/font, etc.

don't put them in areas where it's expected to have ads. put them in areas where they are guaranteed visibility. on investopedia.com, after clicking on a link you'll be interuptted by ads before being forwarded to the site.

try similar techniques. but don't be hard on yourself, because that site has potential

Well, I'm trialing Adengage (http://www.adengage.com/home.cfm), which gives advertisers the option to purchase ad space on my site...

I would like to ask other webmasters a question though: if you have a website ranked around 500,000 on alexa (around 12,000 monthly visitors), what sort of income would you be expecting from adsense alone?
I realise this will vary quite a bit from site to site, but it'd be nice to see what could be achieved with proper adsense set-up.

Its going to depend on niche but for your traffic and site 1.50/day like you mentioned sounds about right. I also tried adbrite on one of my sites but it paid less then adsense.

i have read that on average, CTR rate could be pretty bad, like let's say 2%. i think 1.50/day for a site that would get 12Kvisitors/month is too low. at 2% for $1/click, i would estimate $8/day.

that doesnt mean you have to be stuck at 2%. entire books have been written on ad-sense, fully explore your options and see how you can improve that CTR. making the background color stand out, and placing the ads in locations where people are forced to look at them is one approach
