I am clearing out my one-letter .tl domains. I just renewed these for another year in May. These are great for coupling with an existing brand, for novelty sites (Wouldn't you love to be the first kid on your block with a true four-character domain (that's letter-dot-letter-letter)? Hardly anyone else can make that claim

One-letter domains have also been the topic of a bit of controversy of late. In the .com registry, only three domains slipped out before Verisign closed down the registry -- x , z and q (registered to PayPal, Nissan, and Qwest, respectively). The reason touted for this was technical in nature, however there has since proven to be no reason for the concern. Recently, ICANN was put under pressure to re-open these domains for purchase, but has been hesitant to do so.

So how did I come up with such great domains? When the .tl registry opened, I was apparently the only one in this community to know about it (I had requested information from them directly in the months leading up to the opening). During the launch I was able to snap up 20 of the 26 one-letter .tl domains. I only really wanted one (i.tl goes with a brand I am launching when I have the capital). However I couldn't pass up the other 19 based on their novelty and value.

Recently, the .im registry opened, and they have the gaul to charge £1k (that's ~$1850) PER YEAR for their precious one-letter domains. .tl only charges 70 Australian dollars (~$50 U.S. Dollars) per year, the same rate as all their other .tl domains.

I am content to sit on these for a while. It's fun to just have them, you know. But I am starting a new business that really needs capital. Therefore, I would like to offer for sale my last nine one-letter .tl domains, for your consideration:

g.tl $300
h.tl $300 SOLD
j.tl $300
k.tl $300
q.tl $300
r.tl $400 (this one includes reallytinylink.com for FREE) SOLD
v.tl $400 (this one includes verytinylink.com for FREE)
w.tl $300
y.tl $300 SOLD

*new These prices are fixed, and no discounts are any longer offered on multiple domain purchases.

* Savings for illustrative purposes based on $300 domains. Discount applies to $400 domains based on percent only.

First come first served on these fine domains! Payments by PayPal only.

Thanks for looking!

Good question, rocca -- there is nothing "bad" about [L].TL at all, really. Only insofar as you probably won't get a lot of (any?) typos at your new short domain. These truly are rare gems that are suitable for any web application (ready made business plan I'm handing you on a platter -- launch a no_url_shorteners competitor at reallytinylink.com / r.tl or verytinylink.com / v.tl), short email address ([email protected] is as short as you can possibly get, folks), or just hold onto it and resell it for a certain profit (isn't that why most of of us are here?) -- the possibilities are endless.

Oh, also, do be prepared (as I stated above) to pay ~$50 USD per year to renew your beautiful 1-letter domain. That's a possible downfall. But really, who among us doesn't have 8 .com losers that we renew each year that don't come close to the value of a one-letter domain? So that's hardly an issue, I'm sure... and these are registered until next May, so you really don't have to worry about that now.

I'm holding onto one of these (i.tl) because it is the initials for a brand I plan to launch next year some time (shhhh... can't say more than that). Imagine how cool it will be to let my registered users access their site by the full domain iT....L....com -- but ALSO by its abbreviation www.i.tl. WOW! Question -- Who else can do that for their users? Answer -- almost NO ONE... only someone who buys one of these domains.

Or you can fork over £1k PER YEAR to register [L].im. There's still some of those available.

Come to think of it, rocca, I'm not sure why I'm selling them this cheap. Supply and demand, I guess. I am in long supply (I have 8 left now), but my mortgage demands to be paid. :td: :$: So I'm willing to clear these out at wholesale prices (this is a wholesale board, right?) to try and make ends meet. But don't cry for me, I'm making a small profit (I'm sunk at $100 into these in two years' renewal fees) -- but nothing compared to the profit you'll make if you hold onto one of these and resell it later for x,xxx or more.

So what's stopping you?

Sam,

I am very interested in these high quality names. One thing concerns me though:

registration rules

* Names that consist of characters other than "a-z", "A-Z", "0-9" and "-", or that start or end with "-" (as recommended in RFC 1035).
* Names of less than two characters or more than sixty-three (63) characters.
* Names with "-" on the third and the fourth position.
* Names which are (or include) various obscene or otherwise restricted text strings.

Are you sure these names are protected? Please let me know, thanks.

Keep in mind that these are rules for registration, not for renewal. The rules for registration when I registered them did not have such a rule, and therefore these were registered in compliance with their rules. I just renewed them two months ago, and had no problem at that time either.

A couple months ago I was in contact with CoCCA, the registrar who handles the .tl domains, regarding transfer of ownership of four of these same one-character domains to a previous buyer. All communication from them was very courteous, and handled quickly. They gave us no grief about having domains that would, by the latest rules, be possibly ineligible for registration.

Note that this same thing happened with the .com registry -- single letter .coms are no longer allowed, but that doesn't keep the existing [L].com domain owners -- x.com, z.com and q.com -- from using and renewing their domains each year.

Sorry, I typod the AUD amount (40AUD != 70AUD), but I did state twice in my threads above that the renewal fee is ~$50USD. I have corrected the AUD figure (that's what I get for going by memory).

I am heading to the lake for the weekend in about 30 minutes, so anyone who wants to play with one of these this weekend should contact me ASAP for prompt delivery. Otherwise, we'll pick this back up on Monday.

I'm back from the lake. Any more takers on these great domains at an even greater price?

EDIT: SALE EXTENDED

I am re-opening this sale due to recent inquiries. To answer your question -- these prices are FIXED. These domains are legitimate one-letter domains, and while the ccTLD is a bit unusual, these are certainly worth every bit of my $300 asking price.

To address the specific concern that one-letter .tl domains are now prohibitted, I took the matter directly to the source -- CoCCA.cx, the managing registry for .tl. I just received word back with definitive response that these one letter domains WILL be allowed to be renewed, and will not be subject to the newer rules related to length. Of course, if the domain is allowed to fully expire, no one (not even the previous owner) will be allowed to re-register it (but that goes without saying).
