Question about buying "premium" names

I'm going to start buying some "premium" names ... mostly 3 letter .coms, generic word .coms, some good .us names, etc. I'm just trying to figure out my gameplan for finding them...

For starters, to make things easier for me, I figure I'll stick to names that are advertised as being for sale - that way I won't be wasting time chasing after names that I don't have much change of buying because the owner is unreachable, unresponsive, or not willing to sell. Good idea, or are there bargains to be had going after names that aren't advertised as being for sale?

Secondly, as far as names that are for sale, I assume that anyone with a premium name for sale will advertise it on at least one of the bigger sites like Sedo, Afternic, BuyDomains, GreatDomains, etc. I've never tried to sell a name but if it were me I'd probably advertise it for sale on all these big sites.

So I assume I don't have to "waste" time looking for names on the various forums, because any premium name should be listed on one of the sites right? And do I need to constantly monitor all the different sites, or should I just focus on a few of them such as Sedo and Afternic, assuming most/all premium names are going to be listed on at least these sites?

i wouldn't call "wasting time" the time you spend here... let me ellaborate..

(a) if you notice some threads here there are lots of premium domains
(b) even if the same domains are listed in Sedo/AfterNic/etc often people list them for less price here or are more flexible/open to offers
(c) there's TONs of valueable tools and info in forums the search button you should use/guard with your eyes - anything you're not sure just search
(d) you get to meet people here and there's always an edge by having this "interaction"

the best game plan for acquiring premium domains is to play the game and by that I mean READ, PARTICIPATE, READ MORE at least 2-3 forums, and pay close attention

finally, not sure how "experienced" you are on this game but if you were anything like me expect a good few domains that you'll acquire first they might be 15%-35% overpriced..

as for acquisition strategy patience, perseverence, reading, participation and ofcourse the ocassional luck (i.e. snapping a premium domain at 2 secs from TDNAM) ;)

Wasting your time?

If you look at the names for sale now on this forum you will see that Bashar has 94.com for sale as well as 940.com...
In another sale he has XX.net...

I don't think I would consider that wasting my time if I was, as you say you are going to, looking to develop a "premium" portfolio.

Many big market buyers and sellers frequent the forums....

Good Luck....and keep your eyes open...

Sorry, perhaps I wasn't clear ... I didn't mean in any way to suggest that frequenting forums is a waste of time - otherwise I wouldn't be here. It just seems that if I want to build a small portfolio of premium names I could do so without weeding through dozens or hundreds of threads on the forums every day, and save myself a bunch of time. I guess what I mean is that there are 1000s of premium names for sale on the big sites, so surely I can negotiate the purchase of 25-50 of them and spend a franction of the time I would spend if I was also trolling the forums every day. Unless of course there are incredible bargains on premium names to be had in the forums, and I don't see that happening ...

IMO browsing the forums is not a waste of a time. I believe most of the works is behind the scenes but at least you get to stay tuned to the (pricing) trends. But you have to do your own research too. To put it differently I would feel more comfortable dealing with the owner direct than struggling with the competition :hehe:

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but the only thing you need to do to stay on top of pricing trends is to follow the completed sales, via the big sites, DNJournal etc.

DNJournal doesn't necessarily portray the "real trends"... and by premium domain depends what you talk about >$100K <$50K or just peanuts i.e. couple of thousands?

still forum is your best friend... but good luck whatever you do.. IMHO there's a lot more money to be made in the $500 -> $5K bracket and like any investment i'd advise a pyramid scheme i.e. lot more lower value and few premium

Thanks for the reply. Just out of curiosity, why do you think there is more money to be made in the $500 to $5k range? Just more "undervalued" names to be had at those prices?

You have already emailed me :hi:

Post in the wanted section of the main forums - specify type of name, generic etc, specify extensions and in many cases an idea of the price range you are looking at. You will get a lot of dross but there may well be some gems around. :$:

Look at some of the drop/ backorder sites Pool.com etc, often bargains to be picked up. :)

Good luck
