how valuable are .sc domains?

Only as much as someone is willing to pay for them ;)
whois.sc is the most widely known .sc , and has come to mean "source" to a certain extent. .sc is just another .tld trying to fight it out, and is available as an alternative to .com's whose prices are out of the ballpark if you were trying to register/buy the same keywords.

hmm... I don't understand why ccTLDS charge such high rates when people would rather have common TLDS (.com, .org, .co.uk, .info, .biz and .net... is there a name for these?). I would have thought that ccTLDS would be less expensive than common TLDS and I would have thought that .com would raise their prices slightly, because they are the most popular domain TLD.

I think it has something to do with the country's internet registration authority. If they are charging the registrars high registration fees, companies such as Godaddy have to sell the extension regs at a higher price to cover their cost. As for .com/.net etc, they have been around for awhile and also that icann.org are letting the registration cost at a way lower price, it tends to be cheaper to reg them. Somehow, there are none available generic word (such as comicstrip.com) avail to be handregistered, thus lowering .com/.net reg fees is the only way to keep people buying more.
