It's not only used in domaining, but in any industry where prices are highly speculative and volatile.

In conversation X,XXX is pounced "four digits," and XX,XXX is pronounced "five digits."

The idea is that each X is a placeholder for a number, e.g. X,XXX → 5,XXX → 5,0XX → 5,08X → 5,080

So if you predict X,XXX and it sells for $5,080 you're correct in your prediction.

If you predict mid-X,XXX then you're even more correct. But this is pretty much the limit for what can be reliably (and meaningfully) predicted.
