I had a weird thought this morning that the certain entities in China are doing a pump and dump scheme. Stock markets, Forex, Bitcoins are all heavily manipulated markets by those with great wealth.

Could it be possible to do that with 4L-5L, 6N-8N domains? Or perhaps what we're seeing it normal, a natural progression of the market.

Anyone thought along the same lines? Or am I comparing apples and oranges?

Even if we take that China has never had internet, and they started registering domains in sept. 2015, the prices still do not make any sense. As somone said, domains most have commercial use. They most make money.

What about gold, diamond, they have commercial use? Do they make money?

Of course. Both are used by massive industries and are traded every second.
And their prices change as well.

Difference to the mentioned combinations is that there is high end-user demand for gold and diamonds.

And apart from the commercial use, people keep them as asset and when needed they exchange with money..........

Well, I don't know if I'm an idiot...

but you should read this

https://www.namepros.com/threads/how-to-get-rich-selling-domain-names.890240/

and you should also check price of names that are sold for millions of dollars, they are not meant to earn money, but they liked to secure the name...

Partly correct. But this only works as there are always end-users willing to buy them. Even they are traded B2B, the business owner knows that he can resell to end-users.

I do not say you cannot make money with the mentioned domain name cobinations. But only works until the last investor understood that there is no end-user value.

yeah, those assets don't require annual renewal fees. You own your diamond for good until you decide to sell. You have practical use for it that does not require special knowledge, servers, costs etc. You just wear it. It is tangible. You can pull it out and look at it and feel it. It is liquid asset with proven track record of prices and value.

It's just a regular good old fashion bubble.
Students run simulations like this in year 1 of learning stock market behavior.

You have a commodity, you want to get as much as you can for it. Buying & flipping occurs until someone wants to cash out. People start to get the same feeling by seeing others sell, and they follow.

No mystery here, this is no 'new normal'. Make your money, do what you have to do - don't be the bag man generic 'pinyin' domains you bought for $2k when there are plenty of 4L's to be had for $150 -$200.

spending upto $1200 on Chinese llll is a huge risk
most of you didn't see the last buy out in 2007 to see the spiral.

Those of us that did understand the bubble.

Invest wisely peeps your credit card will thank you later.

Prices have gone up too fast across the board, LLL, LLLL, 4N, 5N, 6N... They will fall as always happens when the market is fueled by speculation.

Could be...
Think about it. Someone or group of people/companies have extra 2 million to invest. They come with the scheme to register 200K of available 6N dot com (of course, with "better" pattern) and also spread the legends that somehow Chinese make sense out of 6 digit numbers and maybe even talk in numbers.

They know people monitor the number of registrations across sectors, so many people realize there is something is going on and want to jump onto the train. So let's say 10 000 people buy an average of 70-80 6N to complete the scoop. Once the buyout is complete, now people want to buy second hand so now there is a floor and even higher one for "better" pattern.

Now all they have to do is carefully manage the sale of the inventory at average of $200-400 (mind you, they have the better pattern ones) not to crash the market just yet and maybe even manage the non-renewed ones if they still have big inventory in the hands left. So, they need to sell around 7K of the names to renew, another 7K to pay for the original acquisition and 7K more for 100% profit on the invested $2 million. And they still have around 180K names worth on paper around $60 million.

I agree with the statement entirely.

What an interesting debate...

Just My Opinion :

When i hear dump I cant help but think about the main reason of the "Chinese Domains" mainly the numbers just because i keep hearing they have NO commercial use..

First, I would like to inform those who are uncertain why these numbers came about.. There is a huge number of Chinese who do not type into a keyboard as we do. They draw on a pad. Remember they do not use the alphabet as we do. If you look at their symbols and think about whether you would rather draw/type in 285 1314 or draw in the symbols for a Dating Website (for example) I would think the numbers are much easier.

Now, Why do I think this will not die soon? The China population is estimated 1,405,041,116 and steadily climbing..
I believe this will slow down to a norm but will not take a dump. Perhaps the numbers will fall faster than the letters but I think they will hang around for a long time to come..

All investment is risky; especially, if the investor has limited resources.
As is in my case.

That's why I'm taking calculated risks.
Looking around, listening, reading and reading some more...
And buying some China-targeted names.

big questions.. wait and see.. or take risk.. always same old story.. opportunities pass by.. do we wait or take risk. tough call.

seems the only people makintg serious money now are old domainers with great doemains and registrars.

As you can see above it is drawn out..

I am in Texas and never been to China. this is just from what I have read. What we need is Someone From China to join the conversation ;)
