Google unveiled its latest project, a public transportation mapping service called Google Transit Trip Planner. The beta launched on Thursday is aimed at people that prefer public transit instead of driving.

The service is currently available only for the Portland Ore metro area and it provides directions for public transportation from a starting location to a destination. It shows a map, provides transportation schedules and offers other itinerary information.

Google Transit Trip Planner is similar to Google Local, aimed at drivers this time. The products are not yet integrated because the company said they would need more development. "We wanted to develop the product further by learning, through user feedback, how people really use public transportation data, and thus how Google Transit can be improved to be as useful as possible." Google Chairman, Eric Schmidt said.

One interesting feature of the product is that it also calculates the price of the trip to be made. The user can thus decide if he or she's gonna drive or better take the bus!
