Promoting a web directory

I just kicked off a new web directory, 6wy.net. This is my first directory that I've built, so does anybody have any input on the best way to get a directory going? I'll be posting in forums asking people to add their site, maybe with a NP$ incentive here. But I need to reach out to audiences past NamePros, so how would you suggest that I best do that? I'll do some link building to help with SEO, and add my directory to other directories, and I'd like it if you post your ideas.

I've seen members here that run successful directories, do you mind sharing how you got started and possibly the revenue that you make, and what its from. I'll be adding Adsense to mine, but not just yet.

Thank you for your input.

The problem is that web directories have become the new million dollar homepage. Everyone is doing them, and everyone is doing them the same. The layouts look the same, the colors look the same, the concept is the same, the rewards are the same. Why do we want to join yours over anothers? Another thing is good designers know how to get their site listed without the directory hit. Sometimes it is more fun and creative to find ways to go up in ranking without one. So what do you offer that is special and makes me want to come back to your directory?
