Private VS Public WHOIS

What do you prefer Public or Private WHOIS? I feel OK with public, I mean, I have nothing to hide. Also when you have a private WHOIS, doesn't that give your registrar the choice to take it? PairNic is not offering private registrations since they say that it is not allowed by ICANN. Why doesn't ICANN allow it? Should they? I can turn on Private on Namecheap, will that give them more right of the domain?

What is your opinion on this? Do you usually take private domain registrations or do you feel OK with public?

Lots of questions. :)

ICANN does allow privacy services. It's up to the registrar if they want to
offer it or not.

Next, privacy services has both pros and cons. One pro is it prevents people
from finding out your contact details and knocking on your door, one con is a
person who wants to "check you out" might hesitate before doing business.

Just giving you one pro and con. I can go on but it could take a lot of time.

Whether to use it or not depends on how you feel about people trying to get
in touch with you via your details on record.

In my case, I prefer to keep my details hidden for the time being. I'll reveal my
actual details when I see fit.

I think its best to use public. a lot of people have contacted me by email and bought my domains even though it was parked on sedo. they might not have known what sedo was or trusted it or whatever. i would only use private if the name is something that you wouldnt want people to know you own for various reasons such as owning a porn related domain and you think you might get fired from your job if they found out you owned something like that. if you have your domains public just remember not to fall for any appraisal scams if anyone emails you interested in your domains. Also if you use public you can always use a PO box or something like that as your address if you wanted to.

I think its important to note that if you use privacy services, you're essentially placing a GREAT amount of trust in the registrar, because legally, they are listed as the owner of the domain. If they wanted to, they could take it from you and you'd have little recourse. I don't like this, so I dont use it.

Its essential if you go the privacy route to keep all your contractual "paperwork" between you and the registrar, so that if push comes to shove, you can prove you purchased the domain

If you are reselling domain names - you might as well leave it public. If you are going to be doing something online and you want to be annonymous, definetly add the privacy.

Im going to have to check on the Privacy rights of domainers. Im curious about the registrar owning the domain name if you add privacy. Im going to go back and read GoDaddy's Domains by Proxy contract.

I don't mind showing my information on public whois searches. I will occasionally get the domain name renewal offers in the mail asking me to pay $35 for a domain name renewal with some patriotic pseudo-registrar. Other than that, no telephone spam (Thanks, grandcentral ;)). If you're looking for whois privacy, consider dnoa.org, the Domain Name Owners Association, which originated here at NamePros with RJ himself.

It really depends on what you intend to do in this industry .... I prefer Private mainly because I don't market my names for sale for the most part and don't want extra emails or phone calls asking me to do so.

If you are one who feels "Everything I have is for sale for the right price" - It probably would be best to show your full contact information.

I would stick to public, unless your doing a TM reg. Either way you shouldnt have to worry about public.

I was never really too fussed until a friend phoned me at home using my WHOIS info... ever since it's been private.
