PR and Backlinks

Well it's time to check PR and backlinks again :)

An update has been going on since yesterday. One of my sites finally received a PR4 from PR0. The rests of them maintained their PR5/PR6.

Backlinks went down, though. Many people have been reporting this also. Some say Google is currently filtering many backlinks. We'll have to wait till things stabilize to see if this is true.

Good Luck to all :tu:

PR 0-3 links doesn't show as backlinks, but they do still count as backlinks for PR calculation purposes..

(almost) All backlinks are good backlinks, not only PR4 and up.. :)

it isnt an old domain i registered it myself.

also if you try link:www.petermcdonald.co.uk google does not register any links at all.

Also you will notice that those 9 links are actually the same site linking

PR can be considered as a "vote" by other web pages for that particular page. Remember, every web page will have its own PR. Example, a home page can have a PR5 but its internal pages can have PR0.

When you have many outbound links in your page and less inbound links, your PR will suffer. This is assuming that inbound links are of the same PR as yours.

Bob Wakfer has these calculations on the number of inbound links needed to get PR7:
- 19 links from a PR7, assuming there are no more than 50 outgoing links from that page. If there are only 10 outbound links on that PR7 page, the recipient page will only need 4 back links from it.
If the links are 80, you will need 30 back links from those pages to attain PR7.

All inbound links are counted. You'll just need many of the lower PR links than the higher ones to boost your PR.

I also have reason to believe that the quality and relevance of the links also play an important part in PR. Links from thematically relevant pages could be given more weight. I have a PR5 page with only 7 back links, and a PR6 with only 11 back links.

The .com version of my main site has 795 back links and it has a PR5. My "lowly" .net has only 79 back links but it has a PR6. So the quality of the links seems to play a major part in PR.

I noticed a drastic change on a site.

It is very basic with no frames and a menu with 5 links in it to the other content on the same site. Before the last Google dance it had PR7 on all its pages linked from the menu. Now it seems like its only the main page that still got PR7, all the other ones dropped to PR0. Isn't that kind of strange since the pages reachable from the menu are still linked from the main page via the menu (as before)?

Someone else that've noticed the same kind of change?

I also find that situation strange.

The only explanation my limited knowledge can give is this. The home page has given or "donated" so much PR to outbound links that there's almost nothing left for the internal pages.

Or, the webmaster changed the menu buttons to include Java. Many believe that Googlebot hates Java. I had a couple of sites using Java on menu buttons and Googlebot can't index those sites completely. When I removed Java, Googlebot was able to index all the internal pages as well.

That's good to know, Ed. I have a site with a P4 ranking that I have not promoted in any way. However, it has Javascript menu buttons which I will now remove!

We'll see what happens with the site after Googlebot gets a hold of it without the Java block. :bah:

This is my own personal experience, though. But I've also read people mentioning that bots could have a hard time indexing sites with Java.

In my case, I always look at Awestats to see how many successful hits I have on the robots.txt file. l noticed that my sites with Java menu buttons don't get any hits on the robots.txt file. When I removed Java, Awestats is recording hits on robots.txt file almost daily. My robots.txt file instructs the bot to index the whole site except cgi.bin.

Yeow, that was strange!

Sorry for the repeated text here, folks. NP was up and down for me much of the day and I couldn't log out a couple of different times. Evidently the gremlins took over in my absence. :tri:

Posts now purged of gremlin repeats. Carry on.
