I have my eye on a LLLL.mobi that is for sale. The LLLL is the name of a very huge corporation in the media industry, however, the .mobi is owned by a private party. I can get the .mobi for almost nothing compared to what I can get for it. Would this be violating trademarks if I were to offer the .mobi to the corporation?

I'd pass b/c you're asking for trouble IMO

Thanks for the response. I didn't know if it would be violating a trademark or if it was just good business?

Goto uspto.gov and do a trademark search. If it's a registered trademark then do not purchase the mobi.

I'm not sure if you should give up so easily.

If the LLLL.mobi is generic in nature, why not purchase and develop it with unrelated content? That way, if the site is somewhat popular and the company is interested, they can contact you.

I certainly do not recommend that you purchase it and contact the company as it might be construed as blackmail.

Am I off-base here?

Well, I could think of a thousand ways to turn a profit with the name without even hinting that I knew it was the same name as a extremely popular media company. Thankfully, it is an abrv. Even though the domain name may be worth XXX,XXX if there was no trademark violation, I am still concerned, but debating the pros and cons.

If you use the LLLL.mobi domain in bad-faith they can take it and even sue you. However owning a LLLL domain itself does NOT constitute bad-faith. Offering it for sale to them would however be considered bad-faith.

Thanks for the link. I checked it for a .mobi name that I wish to register. There were trademarks from 1979 but they are listed as expired or cancelled. Does this mean they are available? Do I need to trademark the name, if I could ever figure out how or can I reg the .mobi name now because the trademark is cancelled at this time (maybe the company will renew in the future). Thanks
