i had to delete this; i'm not sure i'm correct. There are more meanings to the word, especially when used as a noun.

Exactly, but Portant has a few meanings :

The verb to carry "Porter" in the past gives "Je portais, tu pourtais, il pourtait.."
Here, it's not that form, but the present participle, not used that often
Example : "En portant, il s'est fait mal", by carrying (object), he hurts himself

Other meanings
Portant can also be used as a synonym of near, example : "A bout portant" = (very) close
Or another one : Someone/A living organism "Portant" is healthy (no medical issue)
